My 74 2.0L has a engine temp gauge in the dash. It don't work. So is it supposed to show cylinder Head temp? There is not a sending unit on left head the hole has been welded up. Anyone know how to test the gauge and where I can get a sending unit?

Might that be oil temp? Sender under plate on the bottom of the crakcase, The wire on mine was broken near the engine. Might want to start there.

That's what it is, all right!
May or may not be hooked up--check the wire going from the sender to the gauge. I forget the color, but it's in the wiring diagrams. Check to see if there is a sender in the motor. Should be in the left-front sump plate, the one held on by two bolts. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

If there isnt a hole in the haed that is visible maybe the heads were swaped and its on the other side.
If you have FI you will need the head heat sensor. But the dash gage is oil temp ------------------ CWP/VIR 72 914 L20E in rusto. 73 914 L20E 2.0L in resto. a914lover73@hotmail.com |

the in dash temp gauge is for oil temp. it is connected to a thermistor (thermal resistance transducer) in the bottom sump plate (not the oil drain plate) . if i remember, its a green/black wire. i had a 74 914 with this gauge. most 914's have a brake light in the upper part of the gauge where your oil temp gauge is so i believe this option is somewhat rare. of course, with a console, the oil temp gauge is in the console. i have seen 1 other 914 with the in-dash oil temp gauge.

As dangerous as it is to say "all XX versions of the 914 came with YY" (partly due to Karmann's "use up all the parts in the bin" philosophy), I think that all of the non-center-console 2.0s, and all 914-6es, came with the combo gauge that had the oil temp gauge in the top. And most or all others did not.
