In response to a request (from that other 914 list) I am posting some pictures.
Thanks for the bandwidth, Wayne. JPIII |

Someone said this would weaken the car. I have a little 1"x1" in my wall. That hole is huge. Have you had any problems? I need to do that with My V8.

Hummm....paper shreader, hadn't thought of that.
For complete coverage of this thread, see the 914 Rennlist......It's being discussed, ad nausem. As to structual intergity....I have a cage, but a WAG tells me that it doesn't hurt without one. Haven't factored in a big lump of cast iron, tho :-) JPIII |

A round hole or a sqaurish hole with rounded corners would minimize any weakening effects of the cut. The sheet metal may ultimately tear at the corners if its overstressed.

If you need to have access to the fan, distributor, this changes everything. Believe me, been there.
I had to change my bvroken fan belt on my 6-conversion. After looking for hours for a belt, it took 5 minutes at the most to change it. Also helpfull on timing, and you can time the pulley, and adjust the dizz at the same time. Once youll use that hole, you wont be able to live (fix) wihout it. |

Just don't tell people your cutting a hole unless you're wearing Nomex or have a full bottle of Halon.
FTR, I'm the nut that started the hole (pun/misspell intended) Rennlist flame war... I mean thread. At this point, I feel like a tennis ball as I don't know what I want to do. I will be adding a Safety Devices V brace cage and a Fire bottle in the engine and maybe in the passanger compartment. I figure the factory did this "butchery" for a reason, and I fugure that reason was ease/speed of maintance. Many (most) say I can perform the tasks without the hole and many of those say those tasks take a long time. What's the Pelican consensus... Hole or no hole, and I want the whole story as to reason. I'll gitcha' for this :-) I'm a firm beliver in "it's your car & your money. Do what you want." No dogma in my garage (well, except "cast iron sux"). Had the word "dumb" not been used recklessly, I'd have kept my mouth shut....but it's still your fault. JPIII |
