5 Bolt conversion

Will 911 hubs fit 914 spindles? If not why do I need 911 struts?

They do not fit.

911 struts are the easiest way to get spindles for 911 front hubs, and all the mounting points for 911 front brakes. There are other ways you can go five-bolt in the front, and other ways you can mount 911 brakes, but using the 911 strut is the easiest (and usually cheapest!) way to do both.

Re-drilling 914 front hubs/rotors for the five-bolt pattern (and pressing studs in!) can be done, but by the time you have gone through a couple of sets of rotors, the cost will exceed the 911 struts/etc. And that doesn't give you the very nice 911 brakes. (Which are arguably overkill for stockish 914s, though.)
