Opinions wanted: to side stripe or not to side stripe...

What do you all think...

After going through an almost complete resto of my formerly white '73 914 2.0L over the summer (and a painful 3 months it was not being able to enjoy the car in the summer), I finally got my hands on a set of side stripes for the new paint job.

But I'm not totally sure I should put it on. So I leave it in the hands of my fellow 914-ers... should I or shouldn't I?

Here's what my 914 looked like pre-resto in white:

And after the resto.... presto! Silver 914:

Just for kicks, my dearly departed (well, sitting in my back yard completly parted out) yellow 914.... my first one:

FYI the new stripes I have are just like the ones on the white car pic... not like the yellow one.

Lemme know what you all think. Thanks a bunch!

Andrew

keep it clean, it's a beautiful car without haveing to jazz it up, my '72 at home has the same stripe that someone else put on crooked and to high on the car, if you look at any of the cars built by Boyds you won't even see door handles or mirrors, if i could he'd weld the doors shut to get rid of the seam

IMHO the stripes look best on non-metalic paint. Lose 'em.
Your white car had the "negative" stripes and the yellow "positive".

IMHO, no stripes.

Especially with your new color

Dave at Pelican Parts 12-02-2001 09:37 AM

If you'd painted the chin spoiler black, then maybe.... Maybe. But as it is now, I think the stripes would mess up the lines of the car. And I also don't think they look that good on a silver 914.

Yup gotta agree, no stripes on a silver car....white or any other solid non metallic, yes most of the time. No on black as well...

I have smooth, body color rocker covers and valances, no sail vinyl. Planning smooth body color top as well. All non original Porsche anthracite. Thinking about black side stripes (negative) on rockers rather than door height. Any experience or opinions?

Lose the stripes - I know it's a Porsche and don't really care if anyone else does!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/nono.gif

In think it will look cleaner without the stripe. Steve

No stripes - clean silver Porsches don't need any clutter.

IMHO, no stripes. The car looks great silver and I think the stripes will only detract from the clean look.

Forget the stripes. They always looked like something a dealer would slap on to pad the profit.

I took mine off my 74 (phoenix red) & now I kind of regret it. Now I have to answer " what is kind of car is that?" at almost every stop light. I will have to concur with the others, on your though. the silver looks fantastic without the decals. Also the 914 stripes look a hell of alot better than the "CARRERA" stickers I have seen... by the way, what does IMHO stand for?

IMHO = In My Honest Opinion (no text)

ACK!

Your silver car looks good the way it is. Forget the stripes. I remember when 914s were new. It seems everyone had to have Porsche stripes to let everyone else know it was a Porsche. Along with Porsche crest badges on the front hood. I never cared for the look. Keep it clean and simple.

Of course if your looking for style points, you could always add the rear wing from your yellow parts car. Just kiding!

IMHO is...

In MY Humble Opinion.

The striping depends a lot on the color and detail fo the rest of the car. Mine is dark metallic blue, with black bmpers and black valances. So the black stripe lettering looks like it belongs there.

This week though, I am changing mine over to chrome bumpers, and body color SE spoiler. So the stripe has got to go. I hope it comes off clean!!!

My last 914 was dark grey, and had the cheapo ABS rocker covers in gray with the PORSCHE lettering in relief on them. I REALLY liked that look. It lowers the the lines of the car for a tougher looking stance.

For your silver car, I voted no stripes. The ABS rockers would look good on it, but I have never found another set.

Why did you part out the yellow one? It looks dang nice! Did it die of rust?

What kind of Spoiler is on the front of your car ??

Dave at Pelican Parts 12-03-2001 01:04 PM

ABS raised-letter rockers on an orange car, with the raised letters also painted orange:

Similar to what the car with body-colored everything and side stripe on the rocker panels would look like.

The ABS rockers used to be available from us, not that long ago. Looks like no longer, though.

Here is a set of the ABS rockers on E Bay. I think they would look good on your new grey paint job, no stripes.

if it was white, yes but with silver, no

i had a white 74 that had the side name/stripe and liked it (it looked just like your pre-resto)
