Locks & keys on a 914
 

I just got a 74-1.8 and have found that none of the locks have keys except the ignition. It even came with a key inside a locking mech but I don't thing it fits any of the doors or other locks.

Here is my question. How hard is it to re-key the whole car so it only has one key? Is this something I can do myself?

The trunk was locked by accident and when I call a few key places they would not touch it. I even went by the locksmith I had used in the past and he wanted $200 to re-key the car and another $150 to open the trunk.

So any advice is welcome and if someone has the steps to re-key this car I will give you my first born, if I had one.

It's very possible. It's not even that difficult to get the locks out, as long as they're not locked.

Most of the time you can get away with switching the wafers around & not having to buy any. Most of us that do re-keying have spare wafers just in case. You can do the doors to the ignition, and rob from other locks to get them right. Most of us never use the glove box lock, so you can rob from it. The same with the front trunk.

Ok, what do you do to get one back like it came from the factory? With a valet key and full funtion key? My car came with only the valet key.

I notice you mentioned that your trunk is locked. Are you referring to the trunk in front or the storage compartment in the back for the car's roof panel? The trunk being locked and that rear compartment being locked are two wildly different critters.
The trunk release cable on my car broke and I had to take the front bumper off to get access to the little plug behind it that I had to pop out to get the trunk open.
I've heard that the roof panel storage compartment can be accessed from the engine compartment, but it's very tricky, takes every ratchet extension in your toolbox, and is best done by two people (one to operate the ratchet and one with a flashlight to act as a guide).

The ignition & doors don't have the valet wafer, so you don't need to do anything special for them. The other locks have one wafer that has a step in it, that the valet (red) key won't open. The keys themselves have the same cuts, but the red key has an extra groove lengthwise that won't engage if the valet wafer is in place.

Sad to say it's the back trunk that is locked.

I thought maybe I could u-bolt the trunk lid and then be able to reach in and unscrew it.

Any other ideas out there?

I was wondering how to get the tumblers out of the ignition, front trunk and glove box so I could use the wafers out of them to re-key the doors and ignition.

Hey ink,I just looked at the tech article Dave posted,and that is a pretty comprehensive how to. I dont know I would have much to add.The Key in the tumbler you have, does it correctly operate that tumbler?if so just take it apart and duplicate the wafers on the other locks and you should be good to go. as far as the locked trunk..man, good question I will see if I can come up with something.

I don't know how to get the tumblers out of the ignition lock. Usually we re-key the other locks to the ignition.

The tumblers for the other locks generally come out by taking something off the back of the lock cylinder, or by taking the cylinder out of whatever it is in. It's usually pretty obvious once you have things apart.

The rear trunk can be opened by popping the plastic cups into the trunk from the engine bay. Shine a flashlight through one, and use a socket and a whole lot of extensions through the other one to unbolt the receiver from the rear trunk bulkhead.

Great news!! I have the 2 doors and ignition working on one key!!

I plan to get the rear trunk open and see if I can't re-key it as well.

Hope you don't mind me butting in here, but I have the same problem only worse. All I own is 1 valet key. Is there a way to make a black key from it? Does anyone known where the extra wafer would be and if the valet key can be used as a pattern?

Just have the pattern from the valet key cut onto a regular key blank.

Got my trunk open!! I will post some pictures and how I did it later. I have rekeyed the trunk with 2 pins missing since I dont have enough "2's" which I need two more of. Does anyone think this will cause any issues in the future?

2 missing wafers shouldn't cause a problem, but I personally would be happier if it were the glove box or front trunk lock, rather than the rear trunk lock. Congrats on learning a new skill.
