2nd air cooled, help needed,
good morning,
added 914 to garage with 911, need help in 2 areas on 914. Failed emissions on CO idle, running rich, i understand i can adjust idle rich/lean on ECU, trying to get acess to combustion analyzer, just want to confirm if there is any other problem i will create if i do this, (is there someone in phoenix area that rents analyzers?) Second problem, is there a way to move the shifter to the right 2-3 inches, or can i buy second shift lever and configure it as needed? thanks, ![]()

1) Congrats on the purchase
2) Not sure how you can move the shifter.. 3) No nothing about emissions.. other than near me, "classic/antique" etc don't have to be inspected.

You can adjust the shifter, try go look in the 914 tech info center, tab at top of page

Moving it to the side by a couple of inches will take it out of the 1st/rev spring-loaded gate, and may very well prevent the lever from going into the 4/5 gate.
If you really need the whole thing moved over, I would consider removing the gear shift lever from the car, cutting it, and re-welding it in a new position while leaving the bottom part the same. But do adjust it first, just in case it is actually out of adjustment... --DD

the car shifts great, it's my legs, they get in the way. If I am wearing shoes, I have to lift my leg to shift into first, I will get a second shifter and cut/weld into a better position.
Any thoughts on ECU changes to pass emissions, I have read the dial on ECU only effects idle gas mixtures. If so, is there any idea how small of movement it takes to make noticeable changes? |

I can't tell from your picture, but I find that a smaller, aftermarket steering wheel greatly enhances room for shifting. Also, not sure if your car has a center console, but mine never did. When I drove cars with one, it felt too tight.

I'm 6' 3" with a 34" inseam. It takes me a little work to get in and out of the car but I don't have any trouble shifting it. I do have a smaller than stock Racemark wheel with a hub extension, so that may help.
It helps us help you if you fill out your profile and list your location. We don't know where you are, and if there was someone local to you, they may offer to come over and help you out.

phoenix, az. I thought i had it listed and it carried over from the 911 forum, thanks,
Yes, we are close to same size, i have a little extra padding, the steering wheel is not as much an issue as the shifter. I am still working on the emissions problem, previous owner backdated exhaust to 74, removed air pump/egr. Everything was good except idle CO, still trying to locate exhaust gas analyzer before adjusting but plenty of work to keep me busy on 911, (new suspension) |

I'm 6'4 and cured the "shift into 1st gear problem" with the installation of a short shift kit. I had a smaller diameter Momo steering wheel, but I went back to the original wheel with an after market seat that is in between a stock seat and the deep bucket Scheel type seat (see pic). It's a little snug to get in and out with the seat in a reclining position, but otherwise no problem. I think I would try the short shift kit solution before repositioning the shift lever. Regards, Scott

The Rennshift, made by JWest Engineering (which we do sell or at least have sold in the past) is the best short-shift kit out there.
