can a type 2 engine fit my 914?
 

i have had a spare vw engine in my shop for a thile and been thinking of building it up hot to put in my porsche.
finaly tonight i go and look at the engine numbers.

it is a VW type 2 from 70-79 code "gd" and at 2.0L out of a vw bus.

it looks alot like a type 4 and possibly fit into my porsche. will it fit?
it would be aewsome if it fits because this local place specialises in hot rodding vw engines and they have such things as electric cooling fan and shroud (like a 6cyl) and ROLLER ROCKER arms in custom ratio's as well as the usual array of cams heads and 48mm idf weber's, 2.4 and 2.4L big bore kits and everyhting else you can ever think of.

i could really save some cash is this engine fits because
VW parts are so much freakin cheaper than porsche.
i know the type 4 engine IS a vw engine but its in my 914 which means actual vw parts may not fit.

so will my 2.0L type 2 physicly fit onto my 914's tranny and the engine mounts wqork?
i dont care if the wiring doesnt work because i am gonna rip all that **** out soon enough.

exactly the same engine case and components. the heads are different then the 2.0 porsche ones.

My first 914 dropped a valve before I picked it up...so I had the seller drop it a 79 bus motor in (not much junkyard selection in HI). Anyway, it went in just fine, all the sheetmetal and just fit. But the heads where a little different. But all that I had to do was get the 914 headers machined flush to fit the bus heads. It ran good with a weber progressive & hyd lifters. But I think my 1.8 AFC 914 was still faster.

That's beacuse bus motors are low reving, low compression work horse motors....the hp is way lower than a 914 motor. It will work, but it will be a slug...

Bus motor...low reving...thats a good one. Ever driven a type four bus...better yet an air cooled vanagon...they see 5k all the time...

Check a bus motor's horse power curve....sure you can take them to 5,000 rpms....but the peak hp is much lower.

damn if a bus engine sucks that much i migt just build up this spare 1.7L type 4 i also have.

build it to 2.4L and use a 911 stile electric fan and shroud with small pulley for alternator. to keep it from over heating

If the Bus engine has the dipstick and oil filler up on top of the case, it should bolt in. If the filler is a separate funnel that bolts onto the front (914 orientation) of the case near the bottom, then you'll have to figure out how to deal with the filler (should be easy to use the 914 one) and dipstick (a non-trivial mod).

If the Bus engine has oval exhaust ports, the 914 exhaust should bolt up. The later (maybe from 78 to the end of air-cooled?) heads use "square" (rectangular) exhaust ports, and you'd have to have the 914 exhaust modified to fit them.

The Bus motor, in stock form, made 67 mighty mighty HP. The weakest of the 914 motors (73-only CA-only 1.7) made 72 HP.

If you're going to be doing a rebuild on the motor, a Bus case (and crank and rods, and possibly cylinders but not pistons) are a fine place to start. But if you're doing any work on the motor, you'll realize in a big hurry that the VW Type IV is not the VW Type I--and that Type IV parts prices are just about identical to 914 parts prices. Throw your Type I price list out the window...
