914 rear wheel clearance help
Hey I'm about done restoring m 73 2.0. I bought some used EMPI'S 6x15. I went to Les Schwabb yesterday to get tires. I thought I'd use the 205 70 15's that were on my stock wheels. They rubbed in front but were okay in back. Then we tried a lower
profile tire that worked great up front but then rubbed in back. Any good way to create about an inch more clearance in back. Keep in mind I just got it painted & dont want to screw that up. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I did get some that work but their about as narrow as my wheel could take!

Unless you go to a 914 wheel, like a Fuch, Mahle or a Pedrini, you are $hit out of luck using a 205.
Those Empi wheels and Rivieras are VW offset and the biggest you can use is 195s.....you can try to roll out the fender using the baseball bat routine, but you will probably crack that new paint job....

I agree with Mike.
My '74 that I used to own had Empi wheels. I couldn't even run 195-65-15s in the rear without rubbing. Unfortunately, I had to do the baseball bat thing... hated to do it. Then I restored some nice Mahle wheels and no more clearance problems. It's definitely attributed to the offset difference on the Empis... Try going smaller or getting some correct offset wheels. You know, you have the perfect last name to be into 914's!
Anyways, my best recommendation for guys who are running Empis, Rivieras, Centerlines, Bug steelies or whatever and want to fit modern, wide sticky rubber on their 914s is to buy a set of real 914 wheels. You can find Mahles and Pedrinis in the $300-400/set range, and Fuchs are just a little more. The "2 liter" Fuchs are awesome wheels and will fit a 205/50R15 on most (but not all) teeners. They are light, strong, and look "right" for the car.

how about original steelies?
I have EMPI's with 165-15 Michelin XZXs for cruising around (and even 165s almost rub in the rear), but I have a set of original '74 steel wheels. What's the widest tire you think you can fit with those?
