Have you checked valve clearance? Also, have you checked your timing? You might have a sucked valve also. On my '73 1.7l I had what you are talking about. It revved freely when under no load, but as soon as it was put under load, it was like driving with about 10 horsepower, especially when full throttle. My car did have carbs on it, but I don't think that would make too much difference.
It had a sucked valve, and eventually started burning oil.

Hope it helps, and hope it isn't a sucked valve.

It actually sounds like the point gap to me.

Take a look at your points and see if they have burnt.

Mine does this on a semi regular basis.

I have a 72 w\a fresh 1.7 w\injection. Starts and idles perfect. Free revs with no load perfect. Under load it's like driving with 10 horse power. I've systematicaly worked through the common trouble shooting proccess. (for two summers) I even carbed it thinking that may help. I've decided to change the motor. I give up. I wish I could be more help. Let us know what you find.

A VW bus with the type 4 engine I had several years ago did the same thing and the press-in seats in the heads (both sides) had come loose and were cocked so the valves would not seat tight and it would spin at startup and rev well but had no power at all. A compression test showed the problem.
