914 engine conversions

My dad and I have been toying with the idea of putting a Mazda RX-2 rotary engine in my 914.. anyone out there ever do this conversion? The engine is only 70 cubic inches so theres no doubt it'll fit easy enough.. But can the tail shift tranny take the tourque? is there any adaptor plates that would allow the engine to bolt up to the tranny?.. quite honestly im getting tired of not being able to get a good stable motor in this thing

If something fits it's not the internal Cubic Inches that matter, it's the outer ones. I don't know the outer measurements of the Wankel, but then again I've seen a big block Caddy in a bug (some cutting required).

A rotary in a 914 is a killer package .
I actually drove one with a street ported 13b in it .
He had it done really nice....someone does make a conversion adapter...Kennedy maybe ? Or perhaps Mazdatrix or Racing Beat ? This thing was a rocket..I drove it at a charity auto cross and he also had a Chalon kit on it with sticky slicks .
Man what a kick !! This thing had power !
and that loud exhaust note was pure music , winding that baby all the way out in second gear was a hoot....snap shift to third and broke the tires loose....
If I can find picts I will post them. The guy who did the conversion was a perfectionist and it was the cleanest I have seen .
Never overheated in the Vegas summers either .
He did have an aftermarket fuel injection / fuel management system installed . Last I heard he was thinking of a newer Rotary with a Turbo.......

I know its been done at least once...I think you can get the adapter plate from kennedy...and the 901 should handle it unless you are planning on smoky burnouts or a 300+ hp motor.

I have seen a couple of rotorys and it should be no problem fiting in a 914.

The cooling system for the Rx-7 motor is about the same as you'd need for a V8.

However, the rotary is so tiny I have wondered if you could put a (pair of?) radiator(s) in the engine bay, with appropriate ducting and fans. No hacking of the front trunk required! :) If it did work...

The Rx-7 conversion has been done a number of times. So far, I've only ever heard of people using the front-mounted radiator.

But what about the tiny 70 cubic ince RX-2 rotary.. I thought about puting rear fender flares on and mounting a duel radiator system in the fenders

Rotary motors generate a lot of heat, 70 CI or not.........

the raditors in the rear will work if you can get air to them and the hot air away..........nothing is impossible..........

Check out Redawg or reddawg, they make some rotary conversion kits. The flywheel should be available from Kennedy as someone else mentioned.
