Auxiliary Lights
My wife and I use the 914 for Sunday drives and weekend road trips. This year we are planning to do some longer trips. I would like better lighting for all conditions. I have found some combo fog and driving lights that will fit the openings on the 75 front bumper. I am trying to figure out how to wire them.
Ideally I want the fogs on with the running lights or low beams and controlled by the headlight switch. The driving lights I would like wired to the high beams, so they dip together. What pins on the headlight switch will get me there or close? I am also thinking about upgrading to H4 headlights with 100watt highbeams. Besides relays for the aux lights, is there anything else I need to do to protect the headlight switch from burnout? I have read that they are prone to that from overloading the switch contacts. |

In your '75, the wiring for the fog light switch should be there from the factory. Look in your trunk. All you have to do is connect the stock fog light switch. However, the fog light switch is designed only for low beam operation. I think you can simply move a wire in the dash to get them to work off high beam (this may be illegal in some states). Check out a Haynes manual, they have a good wiring diagram for the '75
If you install H4s, you propably need an additional wiring system to handle the load. I would use an aux relay system with a fused hot wire comming from the battery to power the lights. The relay would be mounted near the head lights and be triggered from the old power wire comming from the switch/stock relay to the head lights. If your car does not have fog lights in it all ready, the steel part of the front bumper may not have the mounting bracket for the lights. If you need the front bumper designed for the fog lights, I have an extra one.

Jim, my car has busted foglights, I don't think they are factory as I don't have a foglight switch. But at least someone already added mounts. I was thinking the relay system you describe, would be required for all 3 sets of lights, hopefully that would protect the headlight switch from any overload. I have to decide whether I need to run 3 power feeds or whether I can run one heavy fused cable for lighting.
Scott, thanks, I am actually looking at a combo PIAA combo projector fog/driving light, it is designed to fit in the same space as the original fog lights. Obviously not as cheap as your solution. I think I am going to have to figure out the current flow diagram thing and the various headlight switch outputs. I have found a much better option price wise, Pilot has two dual sets of similar size PL350 and PL602, either will fit and both are less than half the price of the PIAA stuff. They also apparently have separate switches for the two lights which means no rewiring to hookup the way I want them. Last edited by BobP; 02-02-2002 at 10:31 AM.. |
