Bottom of the engine, left-front sump plate. The "taco plate" because if you overtighten the two bolts holding it in, it folds like a taco shell.

dave, can I open it at any time ? Is the gasket re-usable ?
Pulled the bolts, a little oil dripped out. So didn't go any further. The reason, my oil temp gauge barely moves. Wanted to ground the wire to make sure the gauge worked.

The oil temp meter on our stock 914 2.0l barely moves too. During an auto-x on a hot day it may come up the range 1/4 inch as the most. I checked the case with my pyrometer and the temp was okay so I guess it just runs cool. Of course, like lots of other So Cal 914s I do not have the cooling flaps hooked up so they are open all the time. I'd check the temp of the case and heads to see what it is, if okay then you'r okay. Thanks, John. That's probably it. After running for 5-10 on jack stands, I can touch the oil filter.
As for the "flaps" I', going to look at that. This car just came up from about 5 years in New Mexico. Not real concerned. Heater works just right. Even at 20 degrees in the morning. Thanks

The "taco plate" is a cover plate. There is a paper gasket above it, then the plate that holds the sender. This plate has an O-ring around it where it goes into the case.
Removing the plate or the sender will definitely result in dumping the oil in your crankcase onto the ground--so be ready for that. The O-ring is reusable if you don't damage it; the crush-washers under the bolts less so. The paper gasket I'd want to replace myself. It might be fine though... You should be able to cut one out of thin gasket material yourself if you are motivated. --DD

Good info dave...Ever since I started using mobil 1, I've had oil leaking from around that plate. I was going to ask if there was a seal that could be replaced up there but you already answered that question.
