Hood Crest?
My wife got me a hood crest as a stocking stuffer this last Christmas. She says she really likes them on the 914's, I could go either way.
I'm just wondering what the general opinion is out there. |
914s delivered the the USA didn't have a hood crest. They were installed at the harbor by the Porsche distributor of the particular port. Johnny Von Neuman was the importer of record in the southern CA. area, when these cars were dropped of the boat in Long Beach. OTTO

IMHO 914s ought not to have hood crests. They just don't seem "right" on the car. And it's pretty much an irreversible decision--once those holes are drilled, they're drilled.
I remember when I bought my first 914, a '73 1.7 I bought in 1976, the PO had installed a hood crest, Porsche side stripes and a reflective Porsche windshield banner. I always felt like he had an inferiority complex about the car. My vote is no. |
I have learned over the years that if your wife gives you something, especially for the car, you'd better use it, no matter how unusual!
|
If you must put it on the car...Isaw one on the rear next to the " 914" it actually looked right. Still no to the hood...
|
I personally thought that they should have all been delivered from the factory with the badge on the hood.
I havent yet but will be putting a badge in the natural place on the hood. IMHO it looks good and correct. Kelly |
The other thing I should say is that I'm planning on getting the car painted in about month.

My black '73 has one. I like the way it looks, but I can understand other folks objections based on the "original equipment" premise. Now, my '75 has no hood crest, and most probably due to the car's color (Zambesi Green) I have been asked countless times if that car is a Fiat. Maybe another crest would clue them in, and keep my blood pressure down. Ed |
I think all 914s should have the crest on the hood. Mine looks factory and is the proper place to push the hood closed without leaving fingerprints on the paint.

I have the badge and the rear reflector and the stripes on the side because I have an identity crisis......
 geez, all that crap belongs in the trash..... |
Hey to each his own. It's your car if you like it go for it! Who cares what other people think. Personally I haven't seen one on. I'm sure they look great though. I could probably go either way. It's not on my wish list but who can pass up on cool 914 stuff:D

Check out DaveD's photos of the 914/8 sitting in the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. It has the crest!

I have it, I like it, and I would do it again. I save the inferiority complex for my 993...

I'm sure Otto is right about the crest (when is he ever wrong?), but I bought a new '72 in So Cal in Harbor City at a Porsche dealer (now gone, I believe) and it did not have a crest. Back then I was told, remember I said back then, that only 914-6s had them because only 914-6s came from Stuttgart and only 914-6s were real Porsches.

I like the look of a hood crest, maybe when I can afford to get my car painted I'll seriously think about it. You don't need to drill the holes, I never would, I'd just use some 2-sided tape...like most modern emblems use. I have a small crest on the driver-side back, opposite the 914...looks really nice. To each his own though...although, if it's good enough for the 914-8 it's good enough for me:D

I don't have one yet; I will be getting one. I dislike the side lettering. But it's obviously subjective, personal preference. And, definitely, JR has the right reasons for putting one on, pronto!

If my car had one when I bought it, I wouldn't take it off. I don't like then enough to add one. Unless my wife bought it for me, then I'd thank her and put it right on. You know... Make um happy, They keep maken you happy....nuf said.

I never really understood why everyone gets wigged out about others knowing your car is a Porsche. As for the 914, it should stand on its own without banners proclaiming its' heritage. For its' time, it was a very unique car with unique characteristics (and still is to a great degree). Those who don't know what it is wouldn't care if you plastered badges all over the body ~ they would still call it a FIAT.
I don't like drilling holes in the body - ANYWHERE (unless it is tied into a SIGNIFICANT power increase). As far as sticking the badge on with double stick, you're going to have to clip the mounting pins on the badge. My God, you have desecrated a Porsche part (the Porsche police will be on your door step any moment now). BUT, the wife police:mad: can be far more trouble, so I would take the chances with the Porsche Police. Rear reflectors - 6 holes and screws up the ability to open the rear trunk. I'll keep the button. Current project - '70 ~ no badge, no reflector ~ one badge on the rear that says "914". It will have an SC front, 2.5 L stroker and a drivers seat with my butt imprint ~ you can call it anything you want ~ I KNOW what it is .\ Mike Z is correct, it all belongs in the trash. Yeh! Saturday night was a b___h. Time for an "attitude adjustment". |
Ya know, don't we all bash the rice boy mentality from the Fast and the Furious? Putting stickers and badges on a car that did not originally have them kind of strikes as being the same.......
What's the diff? Well, it does NOT say powered by Honda. But my humble opinion is to keep in simple....but it is YOUR car, do what ya want. Matter of fact, I did put a Porsche negative stripe on one my modified 914s....but I did it to break up the paint scheme. The top and the rockers were all the same color, it was TOO white....it worked in that case, but all my other cars have been dechromed, destickered and debadged.... The 914 silhoute is very unique, why detract from it by adding superfluous crud? |
BTW, the Sixes did not come with the badges either. The badges were add-ons, some by the dealer, some by the importer (not all cars got them when they were imported) and some were after the car was bought.
Both of my 914s had them. If I were doing a full re-paint, I'd seriously consider permanent removal. I haven't done that yet, so they stay. --DD |
