Wink 914-6 project costs

The 914-6 original car that is listed by racerbvd in the classified section looks like a real challenge. What would the costs be just to make it a very good driver? Why am I in deep thought on this money pit? Parts are available.....

Depends on where you want to be when you're done.

You can easily sink $10k or $20k into a 914 and not even see much of a result.

I stopped counting around $40k on my car. That was several years ago. And it still looks like rats ass (excuse my french). But at least it drives great!

Are you refering to the "vin" that was posted If its the one I am thinking of, it would take lots of time/effort. To me, a good driver for that would be a $20K start but of course, you can always spend more. Old cars.. lots of work.. some parts may be very hard to find.. what kind of "driver" are you looking to build etc.

It would be a shame to see a real original (matching numbers) 914-6 rot away like that. Sir Andy you should take on a project like that given what you've done. If 914-6's are rare then you would still retain some value if you needed to sell. It might be too late to find a matching numbers car in vg shape for a decent price (say $21k). After checking Pbase most of the cars do make it to Ebay. Interesting to see what prices will be after world financial crisis pt2.

You are correct, the other one in my garage was PPIed, was purchased for over $20K, then still needed to be fully rebuilt, and when it is finished, it will be virtually a brand new 914 and look show room fresh (being built for concours) and hasn't been cheap either..

That would depend on how much you can & are willing to do yourself & have the tools & friends with tools & talent to do the job.
Other wise, you will be writing some big checks, but there are cars (911/914-6s & 356s) that have been brought back from much worse, many most of you have seen..
Jochen Bader, Manager Factory Restoration
Customer Center Classic at Porsche told he at Parade that "if" could find a factory 914-6 in Germany, bastet cases are starting at 15,000 Euros

Because, you're a sick bastard like the rest of us, you like a challenge, but 914-6s are going up in value and many say it is the next 356 Speedster, the question is "When"
Course, Sir Andy has a factory "914-6" tub for sale, you could combine the 2 & still have a real "6" and could work on my tub while enjoying the other, then start swapping the parts back onto my tub when it is ready & hot rod Sir Andy's....

Garage
overhaul cost

our local 911 engine specialist charges $6500

flat rate time is about 40 hrs for a 911 engine overhaul - figure that most good shops are getting $85-$125 per hour depending on where ya live

the flat rate does not cover all the ancillary machine work one would do to build a strong motor

on the other hand - Motormeister will do it for real cheap - $2895 -

Stock rebuild or cheated?? The one for the 914-6 wil need replacent P&Cs, but evething thing else looks good. Course if you are going to build a concours engine, and add a few Ponies, tune it on a dyno, well, you will be looking at over $20K But it will come out looking like this

But there are many here who can & do rebuild their own engines..

If the time comes I'm sure I'll do my own. I have a 2.2 as part of my project 914-6 which is not coming along very fast at the moment. I don't know how tired the motor is but could easily see valve guides in it's future.
