Yes. Not only that it needs air injection into the heads to comply with the "original equipment" requirement in States that regulate smog. If the air pump is missing look on either head and you should see plugged up air injectors. If they are not there, it is a good chance that the motor is not original.
The 75-76 US delivered 914s had cat pipes, air pumps and injectors as original equipment. An earlier model motor will fit, but not be smog legal. If you are lucky enough to live in a State that has clean air AND no smog regs, don't worry about it. It run better and cooler without it. The exact smog equipment originally equipped on the 75-76 914s varied a bit from state to state. From what I hear, some states did not require either pump or cat, and I think at least one (Maryland) required a cat for the 2.0 but no pump Not sure about the 1.8, though.
Does it require one *now*? Depends on where you live. If you're in CA, ir probably does require one. Check with CARB or your local smog shop to find out for sure, though. You may have some luck searching through http://www.smogcheck.org to find a list of required equipment. If you're not in CA, you'll have to check with your local DMV or appropriate authority. --DD |
