Rear brake parking brake options
I am trying to find a post that was posted a few months ago about a member who had fabricated a disk brake ebrake setup like Carrera gt and other cars. The ebrake caliper was opposite the rear brake caliper.
He was thinking about marketing it and I am interested in more info about this. I have searched the past posts and I cant seem to find it can anyone help? Thanks, Kelly |

John Rodgers is the guy over here who has done that. You can see a couple of pics on his "914 Vintage Racing" tech article available in the Tech Articles section of this website.
Clay Perrine over on the 914 Rennlist is making (and says he will be selling) a similar setup as well. You may be able to find the page describing that on his web site, http://www.perrinefamily.com . --DD

Kelly, for another p-brake solution, search on "illco" (or ilco), he posted a thread awhile back that shows how you can put the stock Carrera p-brake assy on your 'teener trailing arms without too much sweat. I was going to try one of the outrigger caliper ideas too until I came across this idea. You may be able to scrounge the parts, and they may result in less unsprung weight among the alternatives.

I remeber that post about the 911 ebrake setup and I remember thinking that there would have to be a lot of fabrication(not my strong suit) to make it owrk but after looking at it again it seems that its pretty close to just switching things with some grinding to make things fit.
I think I will keep my eyes out and give it a try. Thanks for the input. Kelly |

If I remember correctly, the fabrication part involves drilling a cable access hole thru each trailing arm, possibly filing some casting flashing. Gotta get someone to make 2 custom cables for you too. If you are starting with an assembled trailing arm you also have to pull the hub off to get the p-brake assy onto the trailing arm, which will mean replacing the wheel bearing. I'd have done it already except I had just replaced the wheel bearings when I discovered illco's post. End of the season.

Guys,
Yes the major part of the conversion was realigning the hole in the trailing arm for cable fit. However that was only to make it even neater. You dont have to get that fussy about it. Check out also what 914timo has done. Almost the same but has spun the back plate a quarter turn so ebrake cable enters from the bottom. It will be just as good. One minor thing that may not have been mentioned is that a small tab needs to be welded to the inside of the mechanism to give something for the brake shoes to rest against. Otherwise they move too much when force is applied and try to strip out the retaining springs. Wilco. |

Vaughan, am assuming you snagged some older steel trailing arms? The ones I cannibalized were aluminum.
The metal tab on my trailing arms is: 40mm wide 12mm thick 25mm "tall" (off the base of the casting), which is 18mm "under" the outer face of the trailing arm. Looks like the tabs can be made from 1 1/2 x 1/2 bar stock, +/-, if you don't have trailing arms to harvest.
