914 project found - but is it worth it ?

I have been in Vw Club here in Nebraska for a long time and i am a certified CAR WHORE.

I got a call this weekend about a 1974 914 that guy drove up from AZ to nebraska 5 years ago and has been sitting in a barn since...

he sent me these pics..

says it will start up and go still - but needs helio-coils? and has an intake leak? I then ask about fuel injection and he says it has a electronic fuel injection but it has a carb..

he is about 5 hours away... in email said it is targa top , has a fender to replace the bad one.... new tires ( 5 years ago )

115k miles

he wants $2000 ish - good starting point for a summer project - or should i run and run fast?

% year old tires are now just for rolling around while you fix and paint .. if the other fender cut off right and the rest of the part ?? you would need to check how it runs .. if the engine is strong and the only real issue is the damage .. Not to bad .. verify the DMV fees are not late and delinquent ... I got a 300 dollar surprise when I took my clean title and paper work to the DMV courtesy of the PO ... the next question would be clean or total title ....then the inevitable ... these cars are a lot like the VW ... cost you this and that and a little here and a little there all of the sudden you turn around and count it up and then reality hits that it may not be worth what you have into it ...

2k if it runs and goes with out to many other issues .. I would ... Ive done worse though ... go with all 20 dollar bills .. makes it look like more when you count it out ..and Benjamin talks ....

funny you should mention - Arizonia " open " title but dated october 2004 -

i told him he needs to go pay back taxes and sales tax on it - he was confused and didnt understand.. i said they will want back registrations and or will have you sign a waiver that the car sat in a barn for the last 8 years.....

he told me story how he worked for a guy that owned him money and gave him the car instead of paying him...... i know - should just walk away - but the price seems fair and i wouldnt mind a project...

the prices are just silly on these 914's all over the place - from $1000 for a parts car - to $25k for a nice one... hard to determine if you are making the right move...

How bad is the rust? Particularly in the engine bay under the battery, and around the jack points. The surface rust in the floor pan is pretty typical but is not generally an issue unless it is a lot worse than yours. Rust where the right-rear suspension is held onto the car is common, and can be very serious indeed.

A Heli-coil is a way to repair the threads in a threaded hole. It is possible he means that the exhaust is leaking because the studs have stripped. That is a non-trivial repair; there are a number of ways to do it but they all require quite a bit of care.

The single-carb setup is horrible. Fuel injection or dual carbs are the way to go, generally. There is someone on the 914world BBS who rigged up a hot-air intake, which helps the single carb setup's greatest problems, but it seems sub-optimal to me.
