1.7 Fuel Injection Question
I am trying to piece back together a 1.7 FI system. Is there anyway that I can tell what year the FI system that I have is from? Maybe someone knows of some changes between the years?
It appears that the air cleaner housing is different than one that I saw on ebay listed for a '72 1.7 FI system. This making me believe I had a '73. But in the Haynes Manual, it shows on p. 47 that in '73 the system came with a "supplemental throttle return spring", which my system doesn't have. Car year isn't going to help as it is a '74, so it isn't the original engine. One reason for knowledge is that I need another air cleaner as mine is damaged. Maybe this is a lost cause and will have to go to carbs or MAYBE it isn't even a 914 engine? HELP! NUMBERS: car-4742915413 engine-EA070223

The engine code is a 73 1.7. Is the air cleaner have a paper filter or the oil bath one.

If you are looking at page 47 of the Haynes Manual, you are looking at the throttle body for a 2.0. It is mounted vertically on the air plenum(air distribution).
The 1.7 is mounted horizontally to the air plenum. Adding a soft throttle return spring to your car is not that bad of an idea. It just insures a closed throttle in case of cable breakage. Hook it to the cable clamp mechanism and another solid mounting point

Geoff, It has a paper filter, and thanks for the year of engine!
Ron, thanks for the clarification regarding the photo in the Haynes Manual. Feeling much better but have another QUESTION: Regarding the air plenum, are there supposed to be a couple of hoses that are plugged? What I am referring to are a couple of hoses that are approx. 4 inches and then sealed making their existance useless. Sealed by placing a nut inside the hose and tightened w/clamp.

There are no hoses that should be "blocked off". I'll try to get a hose diagram for a '73 1.7 and post it here (or a photo), unless someone beats me to it. They could be the deaccel valve or aux air valve if memory serves me correct. In AZ, cold start is not much of a problem for most of the year (unless you live near Flag,Heber, etc).
The paper element air filter is also a dead give away for a '73 style engine.
