gas coming out of exhaust
My 74 2.0 F.I. has gas coming out of the exhaust. The injectors were sent out for cleaning and i had no problems for a while. Then this came up. Anyone know what the problem might be.....Thanks.

Fuel pressure might be too high, caused by a kinked return line or hooking up the fuel pressure regulator backwards.
Injectors might not be shutting off; that is about the only common failure mode for the ECU that doesn't involve holes through it. Head temp sensor might be unplugged or very high resistance. Are you sure it's fuel coming out? --DD

gas in exhaust
Thanks for the reply David.
It is gas because it ignites and smells of gas. The lines are all new and are not kinked. The pressure regulator is hooked up properly. There wasn't any problem with exhaust other than a little smoke. Then It started to drip of what i thought was black condensation. I checked it out and found it to be gas. Any other suggestions ?. |

Your CHT, as Dave mentioned, could have gone bad.

Question about valves on a 74 2.0
Is there a way a checking valves that might be stuck without dropping the engine? |

You can rotate the engine and look at the rocker arms. Look at how close to the tips of the valves are to the head.
Stuck valves are quite unlikely. It seems more common for a valve seat to drop out of the head, preventing a valve from fully closing. Not a happy thing; it requires removing the heads and having them redone by someone competent. --DD

looking to buy "74 914 1.8
The owner tells me that the car ran perfectly in california. after moving to co (4500') he had intermittent performance problems with the EFI. He claimed replacing the brain would fix the problem for a few months, but never solved the problem completely. he next removed the gas tank thinking it was a fuel line problem...and it has sat for 20yrs. parked with no resolve of problem......any hits on what it could be?

Vacuum leaks are the first suspect in a fuel-injected 1.8 914. The L-jetronic EFI on those cars doesn't like vacuum leaks.
The ECU is very, VERY rarely the problem. It is blamed about 50x more often than it actually causes problems. Unless the metal box has been damaged (e.g., run over by a truck, holes rusted through it, bullet hole, etc.) the problem is almost certainly somewhere else. How's the spark? Fuel pressure? Compression? --DD

that pan in the front trunk goes under the car, covers the steering rack and master cylinder.

checking valves
When taking the heads off, can this be done with the engine still in the car, and
is it simple to just remove the tin without dropping the engine ? Last edited by ado; 06-27-2012 at 12:47 PM.. |

Not really, and not really.
