1970 914/6 no spark

After 5 years of sitting, I attempted to get my stock 1970 914-6 started today. New battery, oil change, fresh gas. When I tried to start it up, it turned over pretty well, but would not start. After a while, I found the engine is get getting any spark. I replace the coil with a new unit, but the same result. Seems the coil is not firing.

I pulled the relays, reseating the harnes, CDI, etc....

Any ideals?

The CDI box will make a whistle sound when the ignition switch is turned on...

The CD ignition box mounted on the side of the battery tray should put out a high pitched tone of around 5KHz. If there isn't that sound, your points could be shorted. If the points are OK, the SCR or the capacitor is dead. I would suspect the capacitor.
I used to rebuild them, but I was looking through my my latest Panorama this morning and there is someone advertising that they fix them. It was a regular small add and not in the classifieds.

I don't hear the high pitch sound from the CDI..will try a new set of points this weekend before I take the leap on a rebuilt CDI.

Thanks for the tips..

If you don't hear a high pitched whine (or whistle as they say) the CDI unit is dead ... period *** (unless it's a Permatune 'cause they don't whistle/whine).

Where are you located?

these guys regularly repair bosch cdi units.... Systems Consulting...Automotive Electronics

you also need to use the correct ingnition transformer "coil" which is differnt than the coils currently sold for this application...
the correct number is for the bosch ignition transformer is 0.221.121.001....
don't use a regular coil like the blue or the silver replacement one..they will lead to premature cdi box failure...

see here for more info:
Ignition Coil advice......

the correct one is on the left and is shorter than the typical bosch blue/black coil

The add I saw is Specialized ECU Repair - Porsche DME Repair, Bosch and Motronic Control Units. I don't know anything about them. Your on your own.
I used a standard universal coil in my test fixture for years and tested hundreds of CDI's. The old Porsche CDI could handle 25AMPs @ 600 V. There shouldn't be a problem but it would probably be best if you use the coil it was designed for. I would test the CDI's for 24 hours at 10K RPM.
