I never thought finding parts for a 914 would be so difficult.
I am going to order the PP piston ring set for my 2.0, but find it hard to believe its so hard to get the cylinder gaskets without buying a complete engine gasket set. What I found online was cylinder base gaskets for 914 70-76. Are all the cylinder base gaskets for the 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 the same size? I asked the sales person and he had no idea. They also offer the cylinder head gasket for the 74-76 1.7 and 1.8, is this head gasket the same size for the 2.0? To go to the other extreme I found at a performance site copper head gaskets in two thicknesses .40 and .60, which is the one I need? I'm not to worried right now about performance, I just want to drive the car. |

The cylinder spigot in the case is the same on all Type 4 engines, so the base gaskets should be the same (although I use sealant instead).
I think the cylinder to head shims were discontinued at some point due to sealing troubles - deleting them is an easy way to pick up a little compression anyway - just watch the deck height - I think at least 0.04 to 0.06" is the minimum clearance between the piston top and the cylinder head. If you need cylinder to head gaskets or shims such as we use on by race engine to control compression ratio then Rimco in LA can get most any size dia and thickness. We had to put some on to lower the compression from > 12 to 1 to about 10.5 to 1. Good luck.

Im alittle confused. Do I need the seals at all. It seems as if the seals are for spacing not sealing at all. Would sealant be OK.

VW issued a tech bulletin about leaving the "head gaskets" out of the Type IV engines. Porsche did not follow suit for some reason... Anyway, VW said to leave out the rings at the top, but maintain the stock compression ratio by installing thicker rings at the base of the cylinder.
I know people who just make sure the surface is flat and level and bolt it up. I also know people who use a little big of valve lapping compound and lap the tops of the cylinders into the heads. There are professionals on both sides of that question... --DD
