Backdating of bumpers

I've searched the archives, but have yet to get a definitive answer on the followign question...

Will the older style bumpers (70 to 74) interfere with the metal tabs (strips) that are on the side of the bumpers? Or in other words, is the removal of these little metal strips required to get the older style bumpers to fit?

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who's been through this before.

Thanks,

Karl Ellzey

I haven't done it, but I've been told and have read on this board that it is most certainly a yes. I am pretty sure you have to also remove the piece that goes along the front of the car that the 75-76 bumper rear edge sits on.

I've been wondering if you could backdate to the fiberglass stock looking bumpers then just cut the fiberglass around the tabs. I wonder if that would work and look good.

Let me clarify...

I assumed that the strip along the front needed to be removed.

I was more concerned about the vertical strips on the side of the "fenders" (I said bumpers before). Not sure if these are part of the permanent sheet metal of the fenders and need to be grinded off, or if they were welded on, and then filled into smooth it in with the fender.

And I know about the shick absorbers and the mounting brackets that need to be removed as well.

Thanks,

Karl Ellzey

Yeah... this is the thread I read before. But I got no CLEAR DEFINITIVE answer on what needs to be removed to fit an old-style bumper to a 75 or 76 car.

Lot's of, I'm pretty-sures and lot's of I thinks... but no definites.

I guess I'll just have to figure it our for myself.

As far as weather for tomorrow... The Orlando Sentinel says,..

Sunday: Partly cloudy. Most of the showers today will be in South Florida.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear.

You're coming from the East, so bring the 914/6! or a really big strong umbrella.

Regards,

Karl

When you add the early bumpers, front or rear, you have to remove the vertical strips on the front and the rear. They are spot welded on you will have to cut them off and you will want to sand of the weld marks and paint the area.
I have done this modification on my 75 1.8.

PS one trick, when you drill the holes( in the body) for the bolts to go through , the ones that hold the bumpers on, drill them a little larger than the bolt, you need the extra to get them in the bumper threads.

I know a lot of my questions will be answered once my car arrives and I can actually look at it..

The holes for the bumper mounting bolts. Are they clearly evident on the 75 and 76 cars where they were supposed to be, or is there some guess work involved.

Someone suggested putting some studs in the bumper to help locate appropriate hole locations.

BTW, where were the horns mounted on the 75 and 76 cars?

Thanks,

Karl Ellzey
