Removing gauge rings

I recently bought a used center console for my 1972 914 and the black rings around the face of the temp gauge and voltage meter need repainted. Is there an easy way to remove these so that I can properly sand and repaint them? I would appreciate any assistance you could provide.

Pull the gauges out of the center console; they're held in by rubber rings.

The bezel is crimped around a lip on the end of the canister of the gauge. Pry back that crimp and slide the ring off. When you're done, you push it back around the lip. The bent part sits against the rubber ring so it's not so obvious.

I've done the same with a tach and a speedo before, but not with the small gauges.

I am told that there are tools that help you do that job more smoothly. I don't know what they are.

Thanks. I appreciate the information and your time in making this reply.

To remove the face, I use a very small flat head screwdriver. Bending the crimp ever so slightly as I go around the ring. It should take 3-5 revolutions to do it right. If you bend it too much, it will kink or tear the metal.
