Oil plug source
 

Hello All,

I found out that one of my oil galley plugs ejected behind my flywheel. I was going to drill and tap the holes and install the 3/8 NPT plug but am not too thrilled with the idea of a stray shaving getting into my oil system and causing a meltdown of my engine. So I will hold off on that solution until I tear down and do a complete rebuild. My question is where can I get one of the plugs to install until the rebuild happens? I didnt see anything in the Pelican site about parts like that. Any ideas? I am anxious to get her back on the road.

Automobile Atlanta sells them: $15 gets you a little $1.00 plug (just like the stock one that blew) machined out of AL and a photocopied sheet telling you how to tap and plug the holes.

My plug just blew and I kept it so if you have access to a mchine shop I can give you the dimensions-email me at benihas@hotmail.com. I taped and plugged the hole with the engine in the car and was pretty happy with the job. I had the same concerns of shavings, so I went to a smaller 1/4" NPT plug (this allows you to tap the current hole w/o drilling it out, and the smaller threads cut less metal so fewer shavings have a chance of winding up in your engine). Also, I dipped my tap into grease, cut a few threads, cleaned it off ,and repeated. The shavings really seemed to stick to the grease. In the end I used Q-tips and degreaser to clean out the shavings and grease. I was able to look into the holes and get all the shavings i could see. The job took 5.5 hours total, and I worked alone. GO ahead and remove the tranny all together if you do it-you can leave the half-axels attached but clearence is limited. It's much nicer and easier in the end to drop the tranny and pull it out.
