Chris,

I thought I taught you better than that.

That is exactly why that drivers side eye bolt is not flush tight to the center tunnel. I learned that the first time I pulled the factory bolt and noticed it was much shorter than the other harness bolts.

Yeah, you know I think I lost/sold/gave away my short eye-bolt. I KNOW on the Ravenna car I never had an issue with this and did not need a jam nut...DOH...maybe fatherhood and working too much has fried my brain

I don't think the actual function of the "sub strap" is to prevent you from going underneath the lap belt. Frankly, if the lap belt is in place and you are not lying down when driving (a la Indy car or F1) you just about cannot slip under the lap belt. I think that the primary function of the sub strap is to keep the lap belt down on your hips where it belongs.

FWIW some of the vendors no longer even call it a "anti-submarine" belt, they instead use the term "crotch strap" or similar. Personally I think there is a bit of both functions involved. It is absolutely correct that submarining in a deep, upright race seat would be very unlikely....unless perhaps the seat and/or a significant portion of the car around the seat had collapsed or majorly bent.

Hmmm... sounds familiar 8^)

Cheers,

Jeroen

PS in regard to the crutch-straps...
Lets just HOPE we don't need 'em as anti-submarine device 8^)
(then again, lets hope we don't need the harnass at all)

Fabbed my own Harness bar

A friend of mine and I fabbed a harness bar (mainly because, Like Dave I wasn't crazy about drilling into the firewall.)

If I read the original post correctly the guy just wanted to do some AX and DE driving for which this set-up should be just fine. The bar is located at the 2 original seatbelt posts plus an additional bar that runs down from the bar to the bolt that secures the reel assembly.

The belts are looped directly to the bar (not up and over) and the only drilling required was for the sub belt, which runs over the front of the seat until I get some competition seats.

The belts are G-Force which are ASI certified and at only $60 a set from jegs.com, a real find for the cash-strapped racer (that would be me!) and PCA Zone 8 regs call for a 5 year age on harnesses.

Some might say not to buy bargain harnesses, but they do conform to the same regulations as much more expensive set do and a solid 5 point set-up with brand new belts have to beat the living crap out of 30 year lap belts, no?

They work great and I'm very happy with what I have for what it is I do.

Hmeeder, do you have more detailed pictures of your harness bar? That looks like a neat, compact setup.
