Different Porsches obviously represent different demographics. There is some crossover of course but you meet very few 914 owners that can afford a new 911TT. I assume that for most older Porsche owners a new Porsche would be out of the question or a serious monetary stretch.

To own a 914, older 911, or 356 I assume you've got to have a little grease in your blood.

Those 911 guys though sure do have fun in the 911 Forum. Check out some of the interesting topics I found:

I like it when I go to an autocross in my little 'ol 914 and I beat the guy in the new AWD, 400hp, 996TT and he asks me "what kinda car is that?"

I tell him it is a secret limited production race car build at the factory.

He then asks "Is that the engine?"

I mumble something under my breath like "No, you dumb ass thats the CD player."

sammyg2 08-22-2002 06:55 PM

You guys are right, the 911 board is lame. I suggest staying off it completely and never even checking to see what is going on there. Besides, they have 100 posts to every one on the 914 board so it is very time consuming to try to follow it.
Oh, and we forgot to slam the 928s. I think we got everyone else, lemme check, yup. We got em.

Too bad those "other people" aren't as cool or fast as us. Wait, forget I said that, I'm the enemy :-)

Yeah, but that's not always funny...

Last summer I almost T-boned a 993tt coming over Magic Mtn - or whatever they call it now - at Buttonwillow. I had been riding the guy's ass (in my stock 2.0 car) and he spun right where it's kind of blind and unweights the car. So I didn't see him initially spin and then he suddenly reappeared directly in front of me -- sideways.

The thought of the repair bill as $8K 914 rams $80K turbo at high speed almost made me pee my pants.

No problem though, he was polite (LOL) and spun wildly off into the dirt, letting me past.

Brad Roberts 08-22-2002 08:46 PM

Oh, me.. me (hand raised)

Dateline: Buttonwillow PCA time Trial (instructor was told he needed to ride with me (whatever) I'm behind 2 fully prepped fat tire'd Hoosier shod 996's with PCA legal cages (no passengers)

Me. 90 hp 73 2.0 on tiny 205 Hoosiers. Its 100 degrees out and I have a passenger. Car now weighs 2400lbs.

Passed both cars by lap three and these guy's had decent lines and a hell of a lot more power than we did. The instructor said to me later that he tried 2 of my lines and dropped a second off of his lap times that day.

campbellcj & Brad, That has to be exhilerating. How embarassing for the 996TT guy's. Just goes to show you, it's not the size of your wallet that really counts. Man, Porsche really missed the mark when the canned the mid-motor and kept the tail heavy design. Just think where our lil 914's would be by now if they could have had the development time the ol'911 had. Scary... BTW, I'm still being nice, just stating facts.

Brad Roberts 08-22-2002 11:17 PM

Rich,

They did continue it... its called a BOXSTER.. LOL

98% of the major Porsche wins where done in a mid-engine car of some sort. 550,904,908,914,917,962,GT1. I'm sure there is a whole bunch I missed, but they knew what they where doing. Why is their "Supercar" the Carrera mid-engine ???

The 911's regulary kick our butt, but only after they have moved us into a different class or added weight to us..LOL

the car snobs come in lots of different flavors. a new guy at work. another coworker asks how the 73' is coming along. new guy "oh you know, the 914 was made by vw and realley isn't a porsche". so, i give him the standard. i tell him to price a new 1600 dp, i price a new real deal 2.0 and he gives me double the difference. complete motors mind you, carbed and fi. then he starts in on what great cars his acura and cettera (sp?) are. me "oh, you drive a honda and an opel, it must be great having 2 four door cars." everyone else chuckles, new guy won't speak to me. boo hoo. smart ass? me?! nah. as far as few 914 owners being able to afford a new 911tt, i know few people with that kind of disposable income period. i wonder what the first service would run?

As long as we are comparing Porsche models, let me throw this out there:

So far I've heard of a modified 914 with aftermarket suspension and sticky competition tires passing a stock 911TT and a modified 914 beating modified 996s due to the higher driver skill in the 914.

Is there anyone out there who believes a completely stock 914/4 on stock type and sized tires can beat a completely stock 911 of the same vintage on a decent sized track with equal drivers? I'm not talking about a dinky 1st and 2nd gear AX track here, I mean a real track.

I've passed many 911s while I was driving 914s, but my 914s were nowhere near stock.

JWest 08-23-2002 09:19 AM

Depends on the track as everyone knows. And what about a cost factor (when new or now)?

It is a futile exercise and will just make people argue, feelings will get hurt, derek_sf will get mad, Br@d will be banished, DD will close the thread, and pbanders will STILL have a great fuel injection site.

The real question is - how would a 550, a 914/6, and a Boxter S compare. Now THAT would be cool to see!

Joe Bob 08-23-2002 09:25 AM

The 550 would probably beat the 914/6.....the Boxster S would cream the STOCK 914/6.....

The 550 would block the Boxster S which would be right on his ass because the Boxster got a late start......then the Boxster S driver would rip his latte out of the cupholder and throw it at the 550 driver....

They would then get out and duke it out allowing the 110 hp 914/6 to pass and win....

JWest 08-23-2002 09:27 AM

LMAO!:D

Um I think it's possible...not me behind the wheel mind you...but one example is a guy named Rick Yap, runs with POC. Time trial and cup race, CI class. That's a 73 2.0 with extremely restricted mods. (My ravenna car was in this class). Basically you can run 140lb rear springs, swaybars are 'free', DOT-R tires allowed, 6" wheel width max, brake pads 'free'. That's about it. Rick is extremely competitive with cars at least 4-6 classes "above" him. He keeps up with, or beats, essentially any stock-ish car through the SC's.

Combination of a great platform to start with, excellent prep, and superb driving.

For Sammy's comparison, it obviously makes a difference if we're talking about a stock 70 2.2T versus a stock 73 2.4S; about a 65hp gap there, plus the E and S cars had better brakes and factory swaybars.
