Oil cooler removal-help
What am I missing? Need to replace the oil cooler seals but can't get the passengers side of the cooler loose. I've read the tech article on replacing the cooler seals as well as all related posts.
The three 10mm nuts come off no problem allowing the cooler to be slipped back about 1/4 in. But the far side appears to be held by a strap clamp which can be released on the botom of the car but also needs to be released on top? The Car has A/C so maybe the mounting is different? Am I missing something? Any help is much appreciated. 74 1.8 |

I'm not sure if the A/C changes anything but usually there is a bracket on the opposite side of the cooler as the three nuts that bolts to the impeller fan housing. If you forgot this bolt the oil cooler wouldn't move at all.

The article is to help you R&R the seals only. The cooler doesn't need to move forward very far for that to happen. If you're trying to remove the cooler altogether, you will at least need to take off the right-side engine tin. That's evidently doable with the engine in the car, but not easy.
The oil cooler bracket (the part that goes around the right side of it) bolts to the fan shroud. The bolt-heads are hidden by the engine tin. --DD

Thanks Steven and Dave,
Was finally able to replace the cooler seals - no leaks. The strap on the passenger side of the cooler really gave me fits. With it loose, and with a lot of prying, I could get enough space for the seals to slide in - but less than half an inch. Nothing close to the inch mentioned in the tech article, but it worked in the end. This job raits a 10 on the PITA scale. Thanks again though for your help. Tbil |
