Porsche 914-6 3.0 Question

I am have a 3.0 in a 914. Using new Webers, Headers and a other wise stock engine. What do I do with the distributor?? Do I hook up the vacume lines?? Block them off?? What do I do with this distributor to make it work with Weber 40IDAs?? Also I need to hook this 3.0 wiring, tach, cd, etc to the stock 914-4 wiring any suggestions? Thanks for the help. I can't help too much on the dizzy question, Maybe purchase an aftermarket mechanical advance unit. You'll need to have the tach recalabrated from 4 to 6 beats per rev. I think a 911 tach will swap into your dash. Sounds like your having some fun..

Yes I know the Tach is different, I just installed a SC Tach (yes it fits fine), why recalibrate a old 914 tach with the wrong red line? I don't think there is such thing as a aftermaket centrifucal unit. This is not a 4cyl you don't have the variety of cheap performance distributors as the 009 or 050 etc.

Distributor advance curves are critical to proper tuning, anyone have some experienced advice?

I'm told that the 78-79 , 3.0L dizzy works best with Webers.

Or

You can get yours recurved to those specs.

Or
You can email Joe. He has a set up like yours.

Joea9146@aol.com. Tell him I sent ya.

Like JP said!

78-79 dizzy or get it recurved. Well you might be able to get away your 3.0L but it might not be optimal for the webers.

IIRC, the vacuum is for retard, not advance. So just leave it as is, unplugged, time the engine at 35deg at 6000rpm.

Concerning the wiring. Any idea if you have an internal or external voltage regulator? If internal you can ditch the relay board and plug into the 14pin connector (by buying a 14pin male connector). if not keep the 3 pin connector going to the relay board and plumb into this one.

The wiring is pretty simple you know.

I consider the wiring harness for the CDI as being one part. The only thing you will need is to bring +12v to it. You can use the +12 that was used for the coil on the /4 to power it.

You will also need a +12v for the fuel pump. Mine is up front now and I'm running it from a red/white wire from the fuse box.

As for the rest of the wiring it's pretty easy.

wire for the oil temp sender (depending on the year of your 914 you might have this wire going to the relay board. My 70 had it).

wire for the oil pressure sender (extra wire that you will have to route to the gauge)

wire for the oil pressure idiot light (use the one from the /4 at the 12 or 14pin connector)
wire for the alt light in the dash (blue)
wire for the starter (yellow)
wire for the tach (black/purple)

Thanks for some answers. So I will look for a 78-79 SC distributor. I am going to keep the relay board as the fuel pump relay is on it and the fuse for this. I guess I will need to switch a couple of the wires in the SC harness around to match. I cut out a few of the extra wires today for the CIS injection, it looks much simpler now.

I was wondering on the CD do all 6 pins need to be hooked up for it to work? There is a green to the distributor (this one has a jumper over to the other pin, 2 brown with ring connectors (I guess these are grounded somewhere but where??) A red one for power?? Black one for ?? And a white one with a ring connector on it where does it go?

On the SC engine itself I was wondering what a few of the sensors are. The one in the case breather cap. the ones on each side of the timing chain covers. The oil sender in the front drivers side is the oil pressure and the one near the flywheel is the idiot light?

Still trying to figure out an oil cooler up in the front of the car. How does the oil line from the engine oil cooler to the oil tank route? is it over or under the body?

I will buy a bood that covers the SC engine soon so as I have the correct wiring diagrams. I really appriciate the tips, thanks.

I'm using an MSD box now. I dont recall the stuff from the CDI harness. Maybe someone else can help.

Off of my head i'd say:

Green is the pickup from the dizzy to the cdi box
Red is for +12 volt
Brown is ground
Black is probably that goes to the tach
white is probably the + going to the coil

The oil pressure sender is looks like a little can. It's on the drivers side next to the fan. Look a little lower and you will see another connector (at 8o'clock from the oil pressure sender. This one is the oil temp sender.

The one at the back still on the drivers side, between the oil breather cap and the thermostat is the oil pressure sender for the idiot light.

The senders in the timing chain covers... I'm clueless on this on. I've seen them on another SC engine but don't know what they are for. I have these holes in my timing chains but they are plugged with a bolt. No idea also about the sender in the breather cap.

As for the oil cooler up front, they usually go up front and back to the engine under the rocker panels and into the front trunk somewhere.

I'm running without a cooler for now as i'm up north but i'm planning on the install during the winter.

Ya know, some 911SC wiring diagrams could come in handy here... Gee, I wonder where you can find those??
