Thinking used to be the original cylinders were of a higher quality material than the newer stuff. You could get your cylinders bored then buy new pistons to match. Either 95 or 96mm is fine. I've also heard the $400 set is fine for most purposes.

$4 grand, maybe it was a set of six for a rare 2.0 liter six motor configuration?????
at anyrate I have used JE pistons 96 mm (slight big bore) they cost somewhere around $500 or so a few years ago (set of four with rings) , I reused my cylinders, over bored to the 96 mm the 96 mm works well with stock FI and give a little displacement boost which can give more power. I choose a mild performance cam that works with stock Fi from Elgin Cams, they have a wide selection of 914 cams. My engine builder likes JE pistons for quality, known good USA made. beware of some Chinese knock offs, good price by the quality is hit and miss sometimes. so somewhere around $500 maybe it is $600 should buy a nice set of USA made quality Pistons. Check out JE, if it is not on their website, then call them, not everything they sell is on the website |
