Motor Mount Options

I was looking through the Pelican Catalog for 914 motor mounts (2.0 1974) and was wondering why the 911 mounts (911-375-043-07) shown on the below page will only work for 1970 to 1972 1.7 models.

Because the 70-72 cars use a different set of motor mounts. They have what are pretty much 911 engine mounts at the outboard ends of their motor mount bar, and solid mounts from the bar to the crankcase. The 73+ cars used solid mounts at the outboard end of the bar, and rubber "hockey puck" mounts between the bar and the crankcase brackets.

The transmission mounts on all 914s are pretty much interchangeable with 911 engine mounts, though.

EDIT: You can click on the "more info" link under the product description, and then click on the "Images" tab on the next page. You'll see parts diagrams that you can then click on to see where the part is on the diagram. Compare the diagrams between the two and you should get some idea of the differences.

Hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread : ) I am putting a 2L and a side shifter in my 72 and have already bought the Pelican "hockey puck" mounts for the engine mount with the shifter rod hole in it. What am I supposed to put between the mounts on the unibody and the engine cross bar?

The later style (side shifter) engine mount attaches with a U shaped solid metal piece. The flexible rubber mounts are between the engine and the mounting bar to provide vibration resistance.

There should. Be an illustration in the PET.

So the forged engine mount bar mounts solid to the chassis with what, a spacer instead of the rubber mounts? Does it use the same large bolt? I get the part about the hockey pucks with the studs sticking out of them going between the engine mount bar and the brackets on the front of the engine as my engine still had broken ones hanging on it. What is the PET? The diagrams in the motor mount section don't appear to show how the bar mounts up to the chassis.

This might help a bit..

Engine to mount bar = rubber mounts
mounting bar to chassis = solid

You can see the mounting piece on the bar here...

Yes! That does help. I have 2 of the proper cross bars in my collection and I remember seeing those brackets hanging on at least 1 of them.

some bars are made for the early tranny but have the late motor mounts. three flavors of four cylinder bars out there. the middle design early tranny, late mounts, is rarest.

so early mount early tranny bars

late mount early tranny bars

and late mount late tranny bars.

the early style bar mounts have a big problem, you whack the bar when driving and the impact can break the rigid mount at the motor, tearing the rigid mount right off the motor, damaging the engine case. the later bars had the rubber between the motor and bar, which cushions the motor from the impact, the rubber mounts will tear, saving the motor case.

later the bar was redesigned again, this time for clearing the new shifter rod for the later tranny.
