has anyone ever changed the springs on the rear hood to anything else, my passenger side mount just came apart, it had been welded before I bought my car. wasn't working so I hooked it up, lasted about a week, driver side works, but it sure is a mess opening and closing hood. thanks for your help..

Google up "914 hood shox". There are kits to install small struts on the rear trunk of the 914. You still use the original pivot (the broken part on your car) as the hinge point, but not having the torsion bar springs puts a lot less stress on the hinge and it tends to last a lot longer.

I thought we carried those, but I don't see them listed in our catalog now...

I made my own back in "88" and I have seen a few other conversions but I don't know where they purchased them. The original torsional really suck.

The springs on my trunk lid were not attached, and rather than go through the hassle of trying to reconnect the torsion bars, I found a gas strut kit on e-bay and installed it on my 914. It works great, and as was stated above, doesn't put as much strain on the hinge pivots.

you want to change the springs to something else? I suppose you could use the springs to make a piece of art, cut and bend them and then weld or braze to make some design. If you had enough of them you could make a metal lawn chair. Or simply use them to stake a small tree to keep it upright in the wind.
You can be really creative, making all sorts of things with these springs.

I imagine a field of springs stuck upright in the ground, up a couple feet with maybe some shiny metal hubcaps attached to them, Kind of like a field of metallic industrial sunflowers in a modern art style of landscaping.

I once seen a Peanuts Snoopy cartoon figure made out of bent and soldered together clothes hanger wire hanging on a wall, I bet you could make some thing like that to hang on a wall out of some of these springs.

Check out Camp914, I believe he has the strut kits available. Other than a bit of trimming on the rear trunk outer body structure, it's a great upgrade. I couldn't imagine going back to the torsion bar springs anymore.
