New Porsche guy needs help

Hi I have a 1972 914 with a 74 1.8 motor. I'm the new owner but cannot get "history" on the car and what was done. I'm looking for advice on the steps on getting it to start/run right. I already replaced the fuel pump, I did get it to start but it back fired and missed and how little power. Based on the spare parts I found in the car, old distributor, cap, plug wires and coil it looks like this is what the old owner was working on. I also think they were swapping parts from both motors so I'm not 100% sure if what's in the car now should be or not. The car was changed to a single 2 barrel carburetor as well. I'm hoping more experienced guys than me can tell me in what order I should start checking or parts to replace first. My thought was to get a new coil, points condenser, and cap. Swap those out first, not expensive and pretty simple. I guess step 2 would be the carburetor, and finally replacing the distributor. Below is a picture of the coil in the car now. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. Tom

The coil's probably fine, it looks fairly new, and they rarely go bad. Bosch plug wires are low on the quality chart, but they may be what's out there. Beru wires would be a better choice. Bosch for the cap, the rotor, the points, and the condenser. Note that condenser failure is extremely rare. Hard to tell from the picture provided, but you may have a Bosch 009 distributor, not known for being appropriate for T4 engines...... VERY limited advance range, and designed for use on a T1 industrial engine which runs at a constant speed.

Odds are you're looking at intake manifold and carb problems. That carb and manifold setup is, at best, junk, and it's virtually impossible to make it run well. So-so, maybe, but never good. Check carefully for intake leaks.

Thanks!

Thanks Capt'n

Everything seems to be pointing to the carburetor. I can only see one adjustment screw and I think it's for the idle. I will have to post a picture and see if someone can help! Thanks again Capt'n this is really a big BIG help!
