Re-painting new Bursch exhaust
I want to treat this muffler with a anti-rust, high temp paint. Should I just sand it down and repaint it, or should I treat it with a special primer?

In an earlier post I asked the same question with respect to high-temp engine paint used on cooling tin. The consensus seemed to be to clean the metal and shoot it directly, without primer. Or follow the mfg's instructions. Not comforting, since I used engine paint without primer on my tin and it has not held up very well.
What paint are you planning to use? Mike |

Hey Chris,
I know I was peddling my "rustoleum BBQ paint" I used last week, but POR 15 has a Hi-Temp paint that I bet would be very good protection. http://www.por-15.com/hightempcoatings.html Check it out,

I have the rustoleum bbq paint, and was planning on using that. I will look into the por 15 as well. Is Por-15 only on-line sales, or do they sell in stores as well?

Well, as far as I know Pelican doesn't sell it. I've always gotten it online. With POR-15 you don't have to primer it, in fact you should either rough up the surface or strip the paint off completely so it bonds correctly. Since you've got a brand new muffler you might want to consider spending a few extra bucks on POR 15.
Anyway because my muffler was already installed and pretty old I just used the BBQ stuff. It really does work well. Not sure on primer, I sure didn't use any. I think that stuff was designed to go right onto metal without it. You'd need hi-temp primer of course. Good Luck,

There is also hi-temp powder coating material that can be used on exhaust.
Sorry I don't know the name of it. I only know it existst because I was witness to money-no-object modifications to a P-kitcar. |

You get what you pay for....
Don't waste your time and $ on the BBQ paint of any brand, they will blister easily, I have seen this from a friends car. He finally used POR 20 "manifold gray" and no blistering\peeling after 2 yrs. so far. They are @ $35 a pint, enough for probably 4 mufflers. You will need to call\email them to see who carries them locally in your town. Check out his "details" page, looks awsome to say the least. http://www.geocities.com/sys_engin/ Thanks |

I used the por-20 black, it worked great. A word of warning, clean the metal well and try your best not to touch it after you prep it. I sand plasted mine and made the mistake of grabbing it and carrying it over to the area that I paint in. Oops, the area I grabbed peeled. I redid that area and it has lasted two years so far. If and when I do it again I will clean everything with prep-sol before I paint it. Here is a picture of mine. As you can see the muffler itself is stainless, if you look closely at the collector you can see some peeling, that's were I touched it. It's been fixed. I always buy online

The co. I work for sells H/T paint for Snowmobiles, ATV's, PWC, and Motorcycles. The best prep is to have the parts to be painted sand blasted. This gives you a great profile for adhesion!
