new guy- modern EFI on daily driver 914

I am kicking around the idea of "building" a daily driver out of a 914 and would like a 2.0 L motor with modern ("Electromotive" or similar possibly) EFI on it. Planning on leaving the motor otherwise in stock configuration, well, possibly slightly hotter cams, with emphysis on MPG. Anybody have suggestions on where to start? Since now in my lovely home state of CA we can now "modify" pre 74 (i.e. 73 ok) autos without smog check worries a 914 sounds like an excellent and fun choice.

Modern programable EFI can be retrofitted on a 2.0, 914 motor. Be prepared to pay BIG bucks though. The ones I have seen also provide for lap top computer down loads and a wide range of adjustments for different climates, altitudes and usage.

If you don't have an unlimited budget stick with the original FI. It CAN be tuned and adjusted for a nice daily driver. If you have a decent, mid size budget, tear down the whole motor and put in larger pistons, a performance cam, a centrifugal advance dist. (like the 050) and dual 40 webers. As you have stated, 73 and earlier CA 914s are smog exempt. The 74s have to wait until 2004.

BTW-The installation of carbs on an otherwise stock motor will NOT give you added performance and WILL give you less MPG. If you need more information, email me offline at ;

Good Luck

C.B. Performance seems to have a lot of experience with putting EFI systems on VW & Type 4 engines. I don't have any personal experience with their EFI systems but I have heard of a few that have and are happy. They have both Open-loop (a few sensors) and Closed-loop systems (a lot of sensors), both of which are fully adjustable. You can "roll-your-own" or buy a bolt on "kit".
They are not cheap however. They start at around $1,800 I think. Check them out at http://www.cbperformance.com

A friend of mine has installed one of the aftermarket systems on a small block Chevy powered Willeys and it is over 4 years old and has NEVER been touched after the setup except for new fuel filters. It has adjusted itsself and compensates for altitute, etc. Might be expensive, but nearly no maintenance more than compensates for it. You might try: [url="http://www.turbocity.com/,]http://www.turbocity.com/,[/URL"] http://www.fuelparts.com/,http://www.racetep.com/fi.html, http://www.sdsefi.com/ for additional info on systems.
