Pull the coil wire off the distributor cap and lay it on the fan shroud so that the metal is about 1/8 inch from that rib on top of it. (make sure the end of the wire isn't touching it). With the key on and the distributor cap off, flip the points open with an insulated tool (aka stick). When the points break, the spark should jump from the wire to the fan housing.
I don't know about testing the regulator. --Case...

Check for 12 volts on the + side of the coil when the key is in the on position using a volt meter or a test light (Your FLAPS has cheap test lights).
The coil is most likely not bad, and the only test uses an Ohm meter and isn't 100% conclusive. The connections at the coil should be: +: Ignition Switch (Black/Red) -: Tachometer (Black/Purple) -: Condenser/Points (Often Green, but not necessarily) The Black/Red and the Black/Purple wires can become very hard to tell apart with age. I had this problem, so make sure you're putting the right one in the right place. If you've hooked this up wrong and tried to start it you probably fried your points. The Black/Red wire will have 12 volts when the key is in the on position. If you're not getting spark, but you have 12 volts to the + side of the coil, then there's something funky about your points/condenser. Check your point gap and the condition of the points, replace as necessary. Last edited by jackmech; 10-23-2002 at 12:42 PM.. |

On some years the black/red wire is just plain black. The black/purple tach wire often looks like it is plain black as well due to fading, but it really does have that purple stripe. It is also thinner than the power wire.
