What's this on top of my fuel tank?

Hey all,
Whats this on top of the fuel tank on the drivers side? How do I clean it? Is it something to replace now while re-sealing the tank?
Thanks again,
Korijo

Activated carbon canister for fuel vapor recovery. You can't clean it, only replace it.

That's the charcoal evaporative canister.

No way to clean or replace it AFAIK. You can repaint it to look nicer though.

I had read somewhere (maybe from DD) that you can bake it in the oven to clean and reactivate some of the charcoal and make it more effective. I guess you might not want to do that when the wife is home though. I threw mine away (actually it is in a spare parts box). I did not notice a difference in the smell but then again I got rid of the FI pretty soon afterwards.

JB,
So if I am converting to carbs, I dont need it? I am not keeping FI w/ my 2L project.
Bake at what temp? Strip the outside first, I assume, right?
Thanks,
Korijo

If you run carbs you don't need a return line or any type of venting like that on the FI. My opinion...you don't need it but save it in case the next owner wants to reinstall the FI. With my Dells, I would not even begin to know where to hook it up!!!

Emissions device only.

Traps vapors at rest.

Remainder of time recieves air flow from blower housing and returns to air cleaner housing. Kinda blow and suck syndrome. Vapors then into engine to be burned rather than released to atmosphere (tree hugger stuff).

Ooohhh Noooo! Last owner here. This car is for the next kid (on the way). I will still save it if they want to go back to FI. If he or she is anthing like my first boy, or worse; like me, it will put in a 6-er.

Hey Korijo-if your wife was pissed about the heat exchangers, just wait until you put that thing in the oven and she finds out! Ha, you'll be sleeping in the 914!

Is oven roasting the cannister a good idea? Afterall, its job was to absorb gasoline vapor. Am I missing something here? LOL.

If Korijo's wife was upset before, wait until the oven goes up!

I think you guys are thinking of heating dessicants (used to keep things dry) to reactivate them, which drives off the water as a vapor and takes the heat energy to do it. As noted, putting something with gas vapors in the oven may just be a way to become notorious. If the activated charcoal was able to release the gas fumes the first time by blowing air through it then it is probably sufficient the second time around. Unlike some other emissions devices that rob hp, this one doesn't and does help with HC releases into the air. Check the vacuum hose diagrams to hook it up properly.

Baste in a butter sauce and put some potatoes and carrots around it while in the oven. Might set the table and get some flowers, she will be impressed, until it comes time to carve.
