Another big "boring" question...

Hey there,
Up late, again. I was reading the archives about big bore on a 1.7. If the heads have been flycut for 96mm p's, can you fit smaller (94's) and not leak?
Is my insomnia making me not think straight?
Thanks

Yes you can, the 96mm barrels are bored out from 94mm two litre so the outside diameter is exactly the same.

Nope, not all are. Some of the 96es are actually (more or less) bored-out 90s, and have a very thin cylinder wall. These are not recommended for longevity, but they are a bolt-on for a 1.7 motor.

You'll have to check the diameter of the head register (the area the cylinder seats to) to see what you've got. I think that the original 90mm cylinders fit in a head register that is 98mm or thereabouts. The larger cylinders may have had a 100mm register. I think. I'm very fuzzy on the exact numbers though, hopefully someone with some experience will speak up and tell us what the actual numbers are.
