Rear View Mirror removal

When I picked up my new '76 914 a month ago to drive it back to Michigan from CA, it's rear view mirror was not attached. I didn't have the sticky pad thingy to attach it and didn't want to drive 3000 miles without a rear view mirror, so I bought a $15 mirror at a FLAPS and put it on for the ride home. Now I've acquired the sticky pad thingy and want to put the OEM mirror on. My question is: How do I get the FLAPS mirror off without damaging the windshield?

If the FLAPS one was glued on, try using more of the glue to soften the stuff on the mirror and a sharp razzor blade and gentley tug on it.

hair dryer might help??? I know of some solvents that break up gluey adhesives, one is called "De-Solv-it" Not sure where i got it, but there is a phone number on the bottle. (602)961-0975. If available to you, give it a shot. You mighjt be able to get a hobby syringe (or something that they use to glue stuff) and drizzle it onto the mirror pad, let it soak, and gently pry it off...?

Call a glass shop/body shop. They probably do it all the time and might be able to recommend something.

I recently glued my OEM mirror back on using some stuff from the LAPS, and on the directions it stated specifically to not try to pry it off or you could bust the glass so make sure to use some solvent or other method to soften the adhesive.

If the mirror attachment base is metal try heating the base with a cigarette lighter flame and gently twisting it off, this worked for me. Good luck

I agree with coconut 321 you twist it off, never never pull according to a friend of mine that works with glass.

I agree with twisting it off. My daily driver Suburban has a spot where the previous owner tried pulling it off and pulled a piece of the windhield off with it.
