Parts help

These are parts from a junkyard engine that I would like some assistance in identifying the oil pump has "8mm USA" stamped on a cast steel cove and appears a little thicker than stock. I also think the oil galley are not stock. The cam is a bolt on gear and is stamped "WEBER. 520H" I haven't split the cases so a measurement isn't done yet. I'm curious if anyone can tell me the manufacture of the cam and pump

This looks a lot like the oil pump I got from SCAT for my project. It should be one of the Melling pumps on this page

In fact I am curious if anyone has tried these pumps -- I have the option of installing either the old stock oil pump or one of these Mellings in my engine rebuild project.

andreic, from what I gather the issue with these types of pumps is that being cast iron installed against a aluminum surface the expansion rate is going to be different in the two materials. When an installer uses a sealant such as the orange silicone in the picture that doesn't adhere to the surface or pores of the metal as the two parts expand and contract there is going to be a failure in the seal. If you use a sealant like the older Permatex form a gasket that remains fluid and sticky the seal is not compromised. I don't think the pumps themselves have had any poor reputation but the opportunity for leaks are there and once installed a oil pump is a pain to have to pull out and reseal. Both my Dad who use to rebuild Type 1 engines to very good success and a twin brother who is a aircraft A&P mechanic have seen these types of pumps work well but care has to be taken with the installation.

So after all, what is the recommendation, for a fresh build? Should I use the original oil pump, or the new high volume one? The engine will not be used in any high powered applications, mostly daily driving. But it will have slightly bigger cylinders, upping the cc from 1780 to 1911.

Thanks for any input.

The original pump works well; I'd say go with it if yours is in decent shape.
