2.0 liter P/C question
 
OK,
Finally I have got a core 2.0 liter engine.
In the rebuild, I am wondering if I need to replace the pistons and cylinders???
What should I check?
Size?
Out of round?
fins in place?
What qualifies a 2.0 liter piston/cylinder set as not worth fixing?
Can I get them honed out and just re-ring them?
Also, how would I check the manufacturer of these???
Are all 2.0 liter P/C sets the Mahle/Euro sets or are some different.
This is a GA motor.
Plan a "stock" rebuild, FI, webcam, balanced crank et all.
Heads will be redone, flow tested by an aircooled head guy here in the northeast.
May send case out for boring and pins.
High pressure oil pump.
Possible external oil cooler will be added, along with a cold air intake system. (basically I will fabricate a pipe to go straight up and box it in just under the engine lid. The lid will be like a GT lid, with all mesh, so the intake will fit under the flat part.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

if items are within factory specs, i would say you can reuse them. i did on my 1.8 stock because the p&c's were "within specifications" as measured by a machine shop. i will bet someone will suggest (and i would agree) that if your p&c's are not euro spec, that, since you've got the engine apart anyway, just upgrade to the more desireable euro p&c's (8.0:1 CR). also, if you don't know what to measure, best go to machine shop and pay them to.

Nothing beats good German 94s. However, if they are worn, but are still true and round, you can probably have them bored to 96s without too much trouble. Then, buy a set of 96mm pistons (about $250 for KB cast ones) and build it into a 2056.

Just a thought, but the German cylinders are good to have and bore.
