does anyone know what the lift/duration is on the stock cam for a 2.0 GA 4?

No, I don't. But there is only one stock cam profile for all the VW Type 4 engines. They're all more or less the same.

Well, they weren't necessarily the same originally, but all of the replacement ones you get nowadays are.

Uhh, except for the hydraulic lifter cams, which have different ramps on the sides of the lobe.

But the point is: a GA replacement cam would be the same as a W replacement cam, and as an EC cam, and so on.

i ask because i am rebuilding a GA engine in an automotive class and have carbs and was wondering if i could regrind my cam to carburated web-cam specs, i would rather buy the cam but am on a bit of a budget. would i be able to get it close to .423 lift and 270 duration?

I think your best bet would to just go with a new cam.

I don't know what kind of class you are in, but cam grinding equipment is pretty specialized stuff.

I would be REAL surprised if the equipment to do it properly is available in a school atmosphere.

I was wondering the same thing, but I imagine the shop class has a deal at a local cam grinder. I mean, there's literally dozens of cam grinders in the country. So, if he knows exactly what he wants, he can tell the grinder who will custom grind a cam out of the stock stick. I can't think of a better way to learn about engines than to have a little equity in what you are doing, all the while an instructor is guiding you. I think they have an inside deal somewhere. Somebody give him the lift, duration and lift at 50 degerees, as well as the lobe center.

Sadly, Porsche (and VW) never put those specs out that I know of.

As far as cams go, everything that I have heard in the past few years says "go Web or go home". Put the re-grind in if you want to tear the motor down after that 20-minute break-in run. If you want to be sure it lasts for any real amount of time, put a Web-Cam in.

Just ask Tom Perso, who occasionally shows up here and who posts on the Shoptalk Forums. His cam didn't even last through the break-in...
