Price check, 1978 3.0 L 106000 mile engine

Price check help please.

I’ve had an excellent 1978 3.0-liter engine with approximately 106000 total miles for several years. I planned to use it in a 914 conversion car or a ’77 911. Things didn’t go as planned, so I’m selling the engine. Here are the numbers; engine series number 930/06, engine serial number 6581147. A top end rebuild was done about 4000 miles ago.

As you may know the 1978 and 1979 3 liter engines have highly desirable big intake ports and injection runners when compared to the later smaller port 3.0-liter engines. The 3.0-liter engine is known to be an excellent candidate to run 250 thousand plus miles. The only problem to date is some of them are starting to show broken head-studs. This engine was found to have a broken head-stud at its last routine valve adjustment. The owner opted for a complete top end rebuild which included new rings on the original in spec Mahle cylinders. Complete head job including valve guides and multi angle valve grind. The following parts were replaced during the top-end repair. New 993-cylinder head studs, updated Carrera chain tensioners, new factory braided ignition wires, resurfaced flywheel, clutch disc and numerous other parts not mentioned in this description. The engine had 102,000 miles before the repairs and now has a little over 106,000 total miles on it. The top-end repairs were over $5,000 dollars. The repair work was completed by a reputable shop and the engine has been driven more than enough miles to ensure that is a great one! The valves were adjusted and a cylinder leak down test was performed on the cold engine (which gives you the most accurate results). Cylinder #1 (5%), cylinder 6# (5%), cylinder #2 (4 %), cylinder #4 (5 %), cylinder #3 (5%), cylinder #5 (4%). These are perfect leak down readings. This engine has absolutely no oil leaks. It is as dry as a bone underneath. The engine has a cat bypass pipe but no final muffler. See photos for more detail.

Thanks,

Papermaker

Hi DD--

Your negotiating skills and sincerity are legendary, I am really tempted. If only you could have thrown in a Warren Spahn rookie baseball card...

Thanks for the offer,

Hi AZ_porschekid--

The warranty is the same as offered by my surgeon after I had knee replacement surgery "Don't screw it up!".

911 guys will pay what it's worth - highly unlikely a -6 converter will do so

put it on eBay with a 15K reserve & see how the bidding goes

i could not sell a complete 180,000 mile 3.2 for $6K a couple yrs ago - so i parted it out and netted $7500 - go figure
