Alternative outside rear view mirrors
 

Any suggestions on door or fender mounted mirrors? (Other than stock)

Zeke, the 914 purist's will probably shoot me for this but, I like the baby turbo mirrors, very solid & Cool looking.

Pegasus has some nice little "F1 style" race mirrors. I've seen them on a few cars locally. I don't have any close-up pics but this car has the one I'm thinking of --

I had a set of the baby turbo's (may have been copies) on my bug and every time I closed a door, I would have to re-adjust the mirrors.

What a PITA!

I like the aero mirrors from the later 911s. I forget who had them, but I remember seeing a flared, silver 914 with them.

Yeh, Dave, those are the Talbot mirrors from the fifties and sixties. Those liitle jewels aren't cheap. Chris, I'll check Pegasus. Great ideas so far, anymore?

I just picked up some electric mirrors from an Audi 90 to replace the baby tornados on my teener. I really like the look of these. They are half of the weight of the 944 mirrors I had stashed. The Audi's only cost $9 each at pick-a-part. I've always wanted electric mirrors.

Why the interest in replacing my mirrors?

Recently I parked next to this Ford Excursion at a dept store...I got that funny feeling but shrugged it off. When I came back the Excursion was gone and my passenger mirror was looking a little funny. I went over and discovered that someone had opened their door and hit my car, breaking the mirror off and leaving a vertical crease in the door. They left no note but instead had balanced the mirror on the door...which is why it looked funny from a distance.

Humm.... how about some Ford Escort GT flag-type mirrors?
10 bucks each and can be automated......

Another possibility is the little "teardrop" style. I think Pegasus carries these as well. I've seen them mounted down low at the base of the "A" pillar, or up high like this --

Well Milt since these are for your race car I imagine, I would go with one of the large "Wink" type inside mirrors and none on the outside unless you need to fill the holes, then I'd go with stock and I just know Kenny has a few to part with. I got one from him a while back when I kissed that armco at CA Speedway!!!! For the ultimate outside, the 935 mirrors are great but you can't see much and I really like knowing who is behind me and where they are. Good luck.

John brings up a good point. I can't see a darn thing out my passenger side mirror, mainly due to the petty bar in my rollcage. The 14" Longacre convex inside mirror shows me the whole rear and right "blind spot" area though. I have a 4-panel Wink also but it seemed to vibrate a lot so I'm trying this Longacre mirror.

The "flag" style mirrors I have also vibrate a lot. I suspect they are mounted to the door sheet metal, and not using the factory hard points, which few if any aftermarket mirrors will fit.

I think I may go to a 17" Longacre inside, a small bullet/935 style on the driver's door, and nothing on the passenger door. My car is still street legal so I think I need to keep 2 rear-view mirrors. (?)

Have any of you guys considered the mirrors off the 97-2002 vettes ? I think they would look good on a flared car , but a little
on the large side w/o flares...
Kind of pricey too...
You can find them new on the web for about $128 each...

Materials of Construction

Here is a picture of the Audi 90. I was playing with the wiring last night. I did get the switch from the Audi but did not like how it looked (mounted in the door panel) I looked around and found a panel mount switch from an Infiniti G20. I got the wiring for the G20 switch all figured out (its a Nissan part from the Sentra). The only thing I have to do now is decide if I want to use the defog feature built into the Audi mirrors. Nah, If I lived somewhere colder I might.

I know this is an old post but what do you think of the 3rd Generation RX7 mirrors? Think they would work on a wide body 914?

That RX7 mirror looks pretty good to me, but you're right that it's a bit big except maybe for a Sheridan bodied car (like yours).

Turns out I broke one of the Vitaloni mirrors on my car last weekend. I was not very fond of the big "flag" style mirrors anyway, so now I'm in the same boat of trying to find something clean and effective to use.

The hunt is back on. I have installed a cheap flag type mirror, but it is not quite level with the ground. Has a black finish. It'll probably vibrate so much that it'll be useless. I have a wide convex mirror on the front roll cage member and I can see out of the passeneger window in the mirror! I can also see well around to the driver's side as well. except there's this big helmut in the image. Where'd that come from? ......oh. See avitar.

I have a Longacre convex inside mirror too. I couldn't see squat out of the passenger door mirror (Petty bar) and might just leave it off -- the right side and straight-back view is great through the inside mirror anyway.

Unfortunately the PO drilled the damn doors for these Vitaloni things, arghh.

Speaking of Mirrors, has anyone used a little round stick on?
 

Has anyone tried to install one of the smallest little round stick ons on the passenger 914 mirror for a better view? I went with the wider but shorter mirror for the passenger side but it is still so small that it is almost useless. My drivers side is the narrow tall one and it is better but it is also much closer to me. I just thought that maybe one of the little round stickon things might make it more useable. i must be lucky though as i don't have any vibration in either side on my mirrors...peter

I have a set of (2) original (used in good shape) 914 door-mounted mirrors I'd be willing to let go for $25 ea, + shipping of course. I've already used baby tornados on one car, and have something else planned for the other car.

The BMW mirrors look like they clear the trim on the vent window much better than the stock. Are you able to see the right mirror clearly without obstruction?

I know everyone will wince,...but I used 1978 camaro mirrors on mine. They fit nice and they go with the Rayco kit.

I see fine thru my BMW M3 replicas.
