3rd is a bear...

My shifter isn't nearly as sloppy as it once was, but it just doesn't like going into 3rd. Makes DE's a bit dicey. Goes into the other gears OK, tho I gotta double clutch it once in awhile for 1st. Pulled and cleaned the shifter. New shift rod and u-joint (to clear the headers). New bushings, plastic on the firewall, bronze at the tranny, plastic ball cup. Tranny rebuilt ~2K mi ago, "it didn't need much", and I haven't abused it (yet).

Any ideas? With the holidays about over, it's time to start the winter projects.

It may just be linkage adjustment. The procedure in the Haynes Manual works for me.

If you were bringing your car to my shop I'd tell you time to tear the tranny apart.
Since I am not, start with a clutch adjustment then onto linkage adjustment. Make sure the cone screws haven't started to come loose.
Bet you can make it better......take your time.

It could be the front motor mounts have seperated, as we had this happen and the car always wanted to go into 5th instead of 3rd, especially around corners! You have to put the car on stands in the rear and then use a block of wood between the jack and the front of the engine case and try to raise it. It should not move upwards at all. Good luck.
