Intro. and Request for Info/referral Fulle Race 914-6

Hello Colleagues , I have been on PP for years now and have been racing a 74 IROC 911 clone in vintage, PCA club, NASA etc etc... but circumstances (sordid details here : http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/920583-magnesium-burns-its-crying-time-4.html#post9673762)

require me to switch to a 914-6 race tub. Plan is to use my 911 motor ( very fresh 3.2SS twin plug, big cams, 50MM PMOs, MSD .. makes about 350hp on engine dyno) in this 914 race tub which is pretty tricked out. big brembos, JRZ coliovers, very sturdy cage i am told etc).

So pretty much i am absolutely clueless about 914 racecars..... can anyone suggest some threads here that would help me learn this angle. Clearly i need a 914 trans or two likely beefed up for more HP, conversion kit/stuff for using my 911 motor, some type of shift gear. (Also, I have two short geared G50-01 race boxes for the 911 , but i hesitate to have them converted for 914 use, until i know its a sound ( and fun) platform.

Where do i get this stuff? who should i bug? who is the mojo? what exactly should look for when i go to look at this tub?

thanks very much to all. I know this is a broad and vague request but its really true.. i do not know where to star! BTW the tub without wheels, Motor/GB,or ignition is about 16K. If i can get permission, i will post some pics here in case anyone knows this car. I have not yet seen it but it comes extremely well recomended from a very trusted source.

Thanks very much Frank. I can be reached at rauscher@wistar.org and i very much appreciate any help my pelican friends can give.

Are you on the east coast or west? Or in the middle?

Matt Monson is the guy to go to with a 914 race gearbox, just like in 911s. Top dollar for top quality... He should be able to talk to you about your goals for the transmission.

Note that a 350-HP 3.2 may very well be over the torque limit for a 901-based gearbox. I know of at least one car that ran a 2.8 liter race-spec motor making "over 300 HP" through a 901, but the owner (Dave Ferguson) got really very good at rebuilding 901 boxes overnight. You might contact him at Veracity Racing Data, but it has been quite a few years since he ran that 914.

Depending on what your new tub has, you will need engine tin, headers, an oil tank, oil lines, a modified engine oil cooler, engine mounting hardware, and possibly more. Pelican can supply some of those parts at least; possibly all of them depending on exactly what you need. The engine mount, for instance, could be the original single-mount firewall type, or it could be a dual-mount "sport mount" type, or a mount bar type, or something else; Pelican only carries a couple of those specific items.

The stock-type oil tank is OK, but for a racer you will likely want something more custom. You can choose where to locate it, you can get whatever capacity you need, and the cylindrical tanks seem to be a relatively popular choice.

A good resource would be Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix. They have a lot of experience with 914 racers. I know that Otto is gone, but his shop in Venice CA might still have the knowledge to help you put together a good racer.

Another good resource would be Tangerine Racing in CT. I know they have a lot of experience with racing a four-cylinder car; not sure about the Six stuff. Chris makes a whole lot of stuff that makes 914s work better; for instance he has a shift linkage setup that is a noticeable improvement over any of the stock ones.

The Racing board here has a few 914-6 guys. You can also find more info on the 914world and 914club BBSes in the Racing sections. (Club had more racing stuff for a while, but it is kind of dying now that George from AA owns it.)

Yep, everything that Dave said. Welcome to the addiction. The 914 is a great platform that will handle that horsepower well if it has been set up right.

915 wevo or vellios tailshift converted gearbox might not be a bad idea.

...that car now runs it's power through a 915 wevo box.

Gene,

I saw your post on 914world about wheels for the GT-6. ...looking over your build, I don't think it matters much. You won't fit into a vintage class so I'd guess that you can run any wheel you want.

Brian Weathered at Midwest Eurosport/Eurosport Racing. He races and continues to develop Tim McKenzie's old car. It's pretty much the last 914 in PCA. He is who I would have build this car.
