Slowly Comming to Life
 

The race car ran for the first time today. Started right up, no leaks, no electrical shorts, no nothing. Broke the cam in and then started fooling with the carbs. Running way rich at idle (what's new, huh?)

Monday the battery went in and I saw the alt and oil light for the first time. A good sign, as this car has been dead for many years before I got it (early nineties). It's been stripped to the tub and rebuilt from the ground up.

Tuesday and Wed, I chased a couple of electrical details and got the items sorted out on the fuse panel. I have stripped out most of the wiring and am down to five fuses.

Today, I fished a wire from the fuel pump switch on the dash and put some gas in the tank. Primed the carbs with ignition off and then fired it. The throttle response with the lightend flywheel and high compression pistons is awsome.

This project was started a year ago last Thanksgiving and is still going on. Left to do is bleed brakes, do a quicky home alignment and replace one suspected bad rear shock. I need some new tires before I can go out to the track.

Somebody buy my 2.7 six so I can go get some new shoes for the baby. Hah!

First drive down the street maybe this weekend. That ought to scare the neighbors. I really can't go anywhere, no plates, no registration, no muffler and nothing but 25 MPH speed limits all around me, but maybe once around the block.

I'm gonna go run it again and put it thru the gears to see if the tranny is Ok. It's up on stands, don't worry about my brakes.

Two comments....replace the shocks in pairs.....congrats on getting it running....

Thanks for the shocking advice. Actaually, I'm going to have thaem revalved for the 180# springs. They are just street adjustable Konis now. On the 2,7, details on 911 parts for sale.

Right On Milt! Cruise it across to my block. Man over here its nightly hot runs of everyones rods. It's like a track here and I'm not kidding. I could list at least 12 hot rods that get lit up on a regular basis. Chris at Foreign just finished a 2180 for my neighbors rail and we tore it up last Sat. <Bugs still in teeth> I love this hobby/cursed habit. Well, any euphoria was sure short lived. Seems the tranny is trash, won't stay in 4th. James (red beard) suggests its the slider. I had 2 trans to choose from, no history on either. After visual inspection, a new gasket and a qt. of Swepco, I can see that I made a poor choice, However, the other one is an unknown as well. so I guess it's tear one or the other apart for a rebuild.

Another problem seems to be one pushrod tube that has decided to be the first leak after some breaking in. I'll get that when I lower the engine to split the trans.

Last problem is the battery I bought. One of those racing lightweights. No way will that turn the motor over to start it. Have to use the "start" feature on the charger. Charger says battery is fully charged, yet that is the only way I can get it to crank. Think it's the starter itself?

I think those superlight batteries are supposed to be able to turn over most engines at least a few times. They won't crank and crank and crank, but I know some 911 guys are using them, with more displacement and probably more compression than you've got. Maybe the starter or solenoid then?

You can always pop in an Optima from Costco, and cut the extra 30lbs off somewhere else, worst case.

My car may be coming apart Real Soon Now for the six infusion and further suspension work; if you'd like to borrow my wheels/tires and/or rear bilsteins for some shakedown runs, just lemme know. My next event isn't till April 13th.
