WTB A/C compressor and bracket
I am looking for an A?C compressor and bracket for my '74 914
Thanks |
a/c stuff
I have that bracket if you need it. The compressor can be found at any Vw salvage yard. The york's are very reliable and all I would recommend is that you replace the clutch on it prior to install. I need a good fuel pump..Maybe we can do a wee bit o' trading???

A suggestion. Use a new rotary compressor. The York compressor that came with the dealer installed AC in a 914 was a horsepower hog.
I used a compressor replacement kit from Iceac (http://www.iceac.com) It was very complete, and it works great. It comes with a new pulley, a v-rib belt, the mounting brackets, the compressor, and all the bolts and nuts necessary to install it. It also enabled me to do an R134a conversion on the car. We have had it working for 2 years now without touching it. On a 100+ degree day in Texas we have to turn it down to keep our teeth from chattering. Good luck....... |
Did you have to replace the pully on the engine (diff belt type)?
Any photo's of the install? Cheers:D |
Sorry for the reply delay.
Yes, you have to replace the pulley behind the fan. The kit uses a v-rib belt (serpentine style). It is more efficent and doesn't slip as easily. Sorry, I don't have any picts. It is buried below the batt and the FI brain. I put it on over 2 years ago, and I haven't had to service it since. Good luck. |

A very, very good suggestion indeed. I would recommend a sanden 5 series compressor, such as a SD508. As far as mounting one in, I made up come brackets that cleanly addpt the stock a/c mounting hardware to accept a sanden style compressor. The 508 wont require you to swap the pulley behind the fan either. You will just have to measure for the correct length of a/c belt. Easy enough. I made two sets of brackets. Turns out I dont need one of the sets. If you want it, drop me a line. I wont be back home for another week, so I wont be able to get my hands on it quite soon. Otherwise, I could shoot some photos so you can get the idea of how to fab it yourself. Takes about 1.5 hrs of labor to make it look nice :-) Take care, Charles Navarro LN Engineering http://www.LNengineering.com Aircooled Precision Performance |
Okay, can you let me know the price to 23233?

Please post pics of the bracket so that anyone can benefit.
So, out of what junk yard car can I snag a suitable newer rotary compressor that will be compatible with r134a? My car came with an uninstalled dpd A/C setup. I've love to be able to get new lines made at an A/C shop and a used (ie cheap) compressor and get it all going again. |
I have head the VW scirroco (SP?) uses a sanden 505/7/8? not sure which one but any should work. (So I have been told)

Will do! I am out of town till the 3rd of August, so I will make sure to hop on here and post a pic as soon as I get back. Feel free to email me at charles@lnengineering.com and I will email those who want some pics as well. I'll try to mock it together so you can see how it all fits together on the engine too. So, out of what junk yard car can I snag a suitable newer rotary compressor that will be compatible with r134a? I would check on ebay for a new one; I have bought a genuine new in box sealed sanden 508 for less than $100-- you just have to shop around. (OT: I have a chromed 508 sanden that is NIB that I need to part with-- I was going to need a smaller profile to fit my custom application of a type 4 in a vw squareback).
