Leaking gas tank

My 924S appears to have a black plastic fuel tank and it seems to be leaking where the tank "clamshells", but only on the right side.. it will drip from 2 places for 5 minutes or so, then stop. I'm hoping to get a photo or two soon, but is that expected? Seems there are a few forums referencing leaking metal tanks, but I haven't found sources regarding plastic tanks. I planned on doing some autocrossing, but now I don't think it's a good idea

So where did this magic plastic tank for a 924S come from?

All 924S cars had metal tanks stock. Did you do a conversion?

Even with plastic tanks, after you fill up fully it is pretty common to have fuel leaks if you haven't replaced all of your hoses above the tank.

Here's the issue:

Early 944's and all 924S's had a metal fuel tank. They are notorious for cracking and leaking, especially on the top of the tank. Do a Google search, you should find several threads.

The other issue, as KD stated is the hoses leak. The vent hoses leak when the tank is full or spirited driving takes place.

In both cases, the only option is to drop the tank and find the problem, then fix.

My '84 944 has a steel tank with a heavy undercoating on it. Test yours with a magnet or scrape a spot to see if it is coated steel or plastic.

To remove the tank for repairs, you have to drop the transaxle. Sorry!

I had my tank professionally blasted, pressure-tested and coated inside and out for just north of $400.

The later plastic tanks can be retrofitted to the cars with the steel tanks, but they need all the hardware to mount it from a donor car.

Solution, part 1.......Don't fill the tank...part 2....less "spirited" driving..part 3..parking it for the winter, anyway.

If you can get to the seam you can sometimes patch these OK with that silver "robot poop" epoxy stick stuff. Obviously with low fuel and clean the surface, etc. I might also try spray leakstopper, I have far-too-rude a nickname for that stuff to post on the 'net but it has it's uses. I'd try it on top of the robopoop.
