Why
Why do 911 owners think that the 944 is not a real Porsche?
Is it because they go around corners better? Is it because they were to supercede the 911? or Just because? I was just wondering and thought someone may have the answer, I went to a rally the other day and well you know what happened. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/a_frusty.gif |
it's because 944s don't leak enough oil.
|
Why...
...Do 944 owners think 911s don't go around corners so well... ...Do 944 owners think their cars were designed to supercede the 911... (that was the 928 actually) ...care about what the 911 owners think ;) the 911 has more history, mystique, style, flair, etc. behind it. That's the main reason. |
Because 911 owners are stuck on only the expensive porsches and believe if your not a rich dick head and cant afford a 911 then getting a 944 doesnt mean you own a real porsche. I hate rich people stuck on themselves.......
|
No, no, no...
It's cause 911 owner's have little pee pee's:p |
dollar for dollar, or even 3 for 1, 911's just don't deliver the performance value of a 944, especially a 951. so discerning 911 owners have to make themselves feel good somehow. after all, they spent all that money. bashing is the easiest (though i don't believe it really makes them feel better in the long term). they should just say they like their 911 and let it go at that.

Actually, I believe you're thinking about the 928: Porsche was planning on sunsetting the 911 and giving the 928 the task of bringing Porsche into the new millenium. Obviously, that didn't go as planned. Quote:
I have many friends in the Porsche community that are 911 owners. For the most part, we get along ok. We poke fun of each other, but it's all done in good taste. Honestly, I've only met 1 guy in my PCA region (NNJR) who had a true distaste for 944s: we were flagging together at Lime Rock during a DE event, and all he did was bash the 944. The funny thing was: his car didn't last the first day of the event (blown motor), while my car was doing just fine. :D Maybe that's why he was pissed. So I guess if you have the proper attitude, and other Porsche owners have the proper attitude, we can all get along! -Z-man. PS: I never PASSED a 911 on the track I didn't like! |
FWIW - I like 911's. 912's, 914's, 356's I was just blowing smoke...
I have come a long way, twenty years ago I was a hard core Chevy/GM guy, I HATED Porsche because they were kicking butt on the track all over my beloved Corvettes etc. Then one day I read about these new Porsches with the 50/50 balance... I am drooling then I look at the price $35-40K... HA HA HA HA! Like I will ever spend that kind of money on a car! Funny how time changes things... SmileWavy |
I was thinking about that today... When I was 15, I knew I wanted a 944. I got a ride with a neighbor in a 930 (very very sweet badass fast car hehe). During the ride I told him I was thinking about finding myself a 944, his response "Get a real Porsche." That ticked me off even though it would be a few years before I'd even think hard about getting one, just because, it is a Porsche, it has Porsche written all over it, and Porsche built it. What makes it not a real Porsche?
Maybe they are upset that we can find a pristine, showroom condition 944 for around 5k?? |
Why 911 owners scowl at 944's is beyond me...
Honestly if you say 911's are better or 944's are better it's all a matter of opinion. However there are facts out there that make one better than the other etc. But let's cut back to the early 80's... Oh the 944 yanked Porsche screaming out of the toilet and if it weren't for the "not a real porsche", the new 911's may never have been. Period. |
I know one old guy with a very nice, owned since new, 356 that still hasn't forgiven Porsche for abandoning the true Porsche design.
I used to own a '66 911. It was one of the most fun cars that I have ever owned. It wasn't really fast (my minivan beat it in a drag race once) and it cornered fairly well after I was done with it but a friend in the local PCA really wanted it and made an offer that I simply couldn't refuse. bleh, front engined RWD is the only way to go for me. I don't really care what they think.

It's the same reason why the 914 is the ba$tard son of Porsche as the 924/944 is the red headed step child, they were designed by Porsche to become VW's but volkswagen didn't like them so Porsche went ahead and built them. Ever notice how many parts on the 914/924/944 were VW/Audi parts? Obviously things changed a bit in late 85 though or like the crazy old fart said it could just be that the 911 guys have short pee pees

Just last summer Excellence magazine had an article on Derek Bell. Sorry I can't find the issue to tell you the exact issue number. Anyway, he owns a rare version of a 924 Turbo, and proclaimed he'd never owned a 911. He prefers the layout of the 924/944 series. I figure if it's good enough for him, I'm in good company.
If you haven't heard of Derek Bell, um, he was a really good driver. |
lol, no doubt! I am just getting to know the performance/fun of owning a 924S (am 16) and I love it. as far as dragging on a track, I dont think it would be the absolute best, but if you were to go on a course. Tha 944 would be doing very good.
Do you think that a 944 (on a straight track 2 mi. long) could take a 1963 Pontiac Catalina with a tripple deuce? There is this old mechanic guy that is always talking up his ride. I dont want to knock him because I honestly dont know. What can this car take? |
What I want to know is why 924/944 people seem to think that 911 people are scoffing at them.
It's like the popular myth that Harley riders scoff at Japanese bikes. I've been riding an '82 Honda Nighthawk 450 since I was 16 (almost 5 years) and I have never once met a Harley owner who talked down about me or my bike. Heck, most of the people I ride with are on Harleys. They're just happy that there's another person out there riding who's not a squid. I think that what a lot of 911 owners dislike is the "punk kid who thinks he's cool because of his Porsche" attitude that a very small minority of 924/944 owners have. Honestly, I'd bet there there are a _lot_ more 924/944's out there that were bought only for the badge on the hood than there are 911's bought for that reason. Aaron |
