Why
Why do 911 owners think that the 944 is not a real Porsche?
Is it because they go around corners better? Is it because they were to supercede the 911? or Just because? I was just wondering and thought someone may have the answer, I went to a rally the other day and well you know what happened. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/a_frusty.gif |
it's because 944s don't leak enough oil.
|
Why...
...Do 944 owners think 911s don't go around corners so well... ...Do 944 owners think their cars were designed to supercede the 911... (that was the 928 actually) ...care about what the 911 owners think ;) the 911 has more history, mystique, style, flair, etc. behind it. That's the main reason. |
Because 911 owners are stuck on only the expensive porsches and believe if your not a rich dick head and cant afford a 911 then getting a 944 doesnt mean you own a real porsche. I hate rich people stuck on themselves.......
|
No, no, no...
It's cause 911 owner's have little pee pee's:p |
dollar for dollar, or even 3 for 1, 911's just don't deliver the performance value of a 944, especially a 951. so discerning 911 owners have to make themselves feel good somehow. after all, they spent all that money. bashing is the easiest (though i don't believe it really makes them feel better in the long term). they should just say they like their 911 and let it go at that.

Actually, I believe you're thinking about the 928: Porsche was planning on sunsetting the 911 and giving the 928 the task of bringing Porsche into the new millenium. Obviously, that didn't go as planned. Quote:
I have many friends in the Porsche community that are 911 owners. For the most part, we get along ok. We poke fun of each other, but it's all done in good taste. Honestly, I've only met 1 guy in my PCA region (NNJR) who had a true distaste for 944s: we were flagging together at Lime Rock during a DE event, and all he did was bash the 944. The funny thing was: his car didn't last the first day of the event (blown motor), while my car was doing just fine. :D Maybe that's why he was pissed. So I guess if you have the proper attitude, and other Porsche owners have the proper attitude, we can all get along! -Z-man. PS: I never PASSED a 911 on the track I didn't like! |
FWIW - I like 911's. 912's, 914's, 356's I was just blowing smoke...
I have come a long way, twenty years ago I was a hard core Chevy/GM guy, I HATED Porsche because they were kicking butt on the track all over my beloved Corvettes etc. Then one day I read about these new Porsches with the 50/50 balance... I am drooling then I look at the price $35-40K... HA HA HA HA! Like I will ever spend that kind of money on a car! Funny how time changes things... SmileWavy |
I was thinking about that today... When I was 15, I knew I wanted a 944. I got a ride with a neighbor in a 930 (very very sweet badass fast car hehe). During the ride I told him I was thinking about finding myself a 944, his response "Get a real Porsche." That ticked me off even though it would be a few years before I'd even think hard about getting one, just because, it is a Porsche, it has Porsche written all over it, and Porsche built it. What makes it not a real Porsche?
Maybe they are upset that we can find a pristine, showroom condition 944 for around 5k?? |
Why 911 owners scowl at 944's is beyond me...
Honestly if you say 911's are better or 944's are better it's all a matter of opinion. However there are facts out there that make one better than the other etc. But let's cut back to the early 80's... Oh the 944 yanked Porsche screaming out of the toilet and if it weren't for the "not a real porsche", the new 911's may never have been. Period. |
I know one old guy with a very nice, owned since new, 356 that still hasn't forgiven Porsche for abandoning the true Porsche design.
I used to own a '66 911. It was one of the most fun cars that I have ever owned. It wasn't really fast (my minivan beat it in a drag race once) and it cornered fairly well after I was done with it but a friend in the local PCA really wanted it and made an offer that I simply couldn't refuse. Steve Frew |
bleh, front engined RWD is the only way to go for me. I don't really care what they think.
|
It's the same reason why the 914 is the ba$tard son of Porsche as the 924/944 is the red headed step child, they were designed by Porsche to become VW's but volkswagen didn't like them so Porsche went ahead and built them. Ever notice how many parts on the 914/924/944 were VW/Audi parts? Obviously things changed a bit in late 85 though or like the crazy old fart said it could just be that the 911 guys have short pee pees
|
Just last summer Excellence magazine had an article on Derek Bell. Sorry I can't find the issue to tell you the exact issue number. Anyway, he owns a rare version of a 924 Turbo, and proclaimed he'd never owned a 911. He prefers the layout of the 924/944 series. I figure if it's good enough for him, I'm in good company.
If you haven't heard of Derek Bell, um, he was a really good driver. |
lol, no doubt! I am just getting to know the performance/fun of owning a 924S (am 16) and I love it. as far as dragging on a track, I dont think it would be the absolute best, but if you were to go on a course. Tha 944 would be doing very good.
Do you think that a 944 (on a straight track 2 mi. long) could take a 1963 Pontiac Catalina with a tripple deuce? There is this old mechanic guy that is always talking up his ride. I dont want to knock him because I honestly dont know. What can this car take? |
What I want to know is why 924/944 people seem to think that 911 people are scoffing at them.
It's like the popular myth that Harley riders scoff at Japanese bikes. I've been riding an '82 Honda Nighthawk 450 since I was 16 (almost 5 years) and I have never once met a Harley owner who talked down about me or my bike. Heck, most of the people I ride with are on Harleys. They're just happy that there's another person out there riding who's not a squid. I think that what a lot of 911 owners dislike is the "punk kid who thinks he's cool because of his Porsche" attitude that a very small minority of 924/944 owners have. Honestly, I'd bet there there are a _lot_ more 924/944's out there that were bought only for the badge on the hood than there are 911's bought for that reason. Aaron |

Extremely bad ass car....nice... |
So I should give my local PCA another chance. It was a good day just a few arrogant 911 owners.
I will say also alot of very freindly people as well. As one older gent told me "You didn't just buy a car you chose a life style a very fast and costly lifestyle" I think that I believe him. Q: How do you keep your licence and still drive your Porsche? |
Well I've never owned a 911, but I did get to drive one once.
It was quite a bit different from my 924S. I mean I liked the car alot and if I hadn't owned other porsches before I could have easily fallen in love with it and said" this is the car I want" The funny thing was that I killed the motor twice just trying to get it out of the parking lot. It had like a lag to the throttle response. I had to push down much more on the gas to make it go. whereas with my 924S you can make it lurch forward by blipping the throttle. And the shifting was like a bug, actually the whole experience of being in it and driving it was rather like a more solid better, handling, faster bug. The one thing I really noticed though was the attention it attracted. I could tell everyone was looking at me when I drove it. I pulled up to a four way stop and even though it wasn't my turn everyone sat there and waited for me to go first. And I could tell they were all thinking" I sure as hell don't want to hit that thing!" I think thats what it's all about with the 911 is the look of the distinct sexy curves it has and the attention and status that goes with it. |
Dad has a 911 C2. Its a fun car to drive, definatley faster than my 924. The handeling is great in my oppinion. When you let off the brakes and step on the gas in a corner the rear end digs in and its its a blast.
I think 911 owners dislike 924/944's because they are so inexpensive. When you can buy a Porsche for $1,500 they feel it makes their cars less exclusive. Alot of people do buy Porsche's in order to show how much money they have. I think my 924 is eaiser, and more comfortale to drive than dads 911 C2. |
I had a Pontiac Catalina circa 1981, a remarkably dependable ghetto sled as ever they made. Looked like a block of wood and handled just as well. Triple duces? You just like saying it, don't ya? Just sorta rolls off the toungue, commands attn, and makes it appear for a moment you know what you're talking about. I had a friend with a Roadrunner with a six pack, and that thing would tear some major a$$. Course it had a 440 in it. You could put 12 carbs on a Pontiac 301 and it just won't have the same impact. The Corvair, btw, IMO, is a very underated vehicle.

Jealousy is interesting...

2. Go autocrossing and participate in Driver's Ed events on the track: that will get your 'Need for Speed' cravings satisfied. 3. Buy a crappy Subaru for your daily commute. Well, at least that's what I did, except that my car already came in red! :D -Z. |
You know what I find???
I find a lot of the "the 944 isn't a real Porsche" comes from regular non-Porsche folk who are jealous. They certainly cannot afford a 911 and are afraid of owning a 944 (cost of repairing,etc.). They can't be outrightly jealous of the 911 - it's too far out of their element - but the 944 is just close enough that it hurts their feelings they they are driving around in a mini-van or a Yugo and not a 944. The "average Joe" can own a 944 - but said "average Joe" must also be a certain type of person. He/she must have the "lust". He/she must be handy around cars. He/she must be open to the advantages/disadvantages of owning a Porsche. I don't know what it is, but people just love belittling other people to build themselves up - so, when "average Joe" shows up driving a 944, other people will try and belittle it. I've had three occasions where someone has used the "it's not a real Porsche" quote on me. My response every time??? Where is YOUR "non-Porsche"???? 944S Boyeee |
911 owners have back-seat phobia. They only think as far as the front seat.

I reread what I wrote, and didn't clarify: owning a RED Porsche keeps me from driving fast all the time, not just when I think there's a cop around. Knowing that they can spot me a mile away, keeps me from driving fast. The random police trap is still, IMHO, one of the best tools police use to catch speeders. Just wish they'd spend more time enforcing more important laws. End of rant. -Z. |

1. Paint your Tarus red. 2. Put a Porsche crest on the hood 3. Go autocrossing with it! 4. Pick up chicks in your new, one-of-a-kind Porsche 4-door. :D Hang in there, -Z-man. |
Why?...because they are more interested in "status" symbols  . Little do they realize dollar per dollar with equal HP the 911 don't stand a chance against 944. IMHO the 1986/90 944 Turbos are the best looking sports cars Porsche made to this date. Though 911 are nice especially the 930s but I don't crave one in the least :p
|
Damn Z-Man. LOL. Do chicks dig Red/4-Door/Porsche Crest Wearing/Gt Sticker having Taurus's?
Also what is J/K Frank B? |
Tat would be THE car to display on the http://www.beaterz.com website!!!..
I have an Idea.. depending on how much you really want to do this.. go to a marine supply place. Have them mix Guards red.. as close as possible.. wet sand your entire car.. roll on the boat paint.. let it dry.. make a spoiler like the 930 has.. paint your wheels like fuchs..(any spray paint will work.. I'd use rustoleum>>) order a few PORSCHE crests.. and order a Turbo logo for the rear.. apply as you need to.. get a PORSCHE front windshield sticker....apply...then snap a few pics and postem'...You could probablly sell it for a few bucks to someone..... THen buy your 944.... Frank B |
Is this what kind of modications I am going to have to make to make me feel like a P. Guy again.
http://www.beaterz.com/one_liners/07...s/taurus_m.jpg |
that's nothing.. imagine what it would look like with a whale tail and painted guards red.. with crests all over it.... Hey maybe Jay Leno would buiy it off of you..

Lots of 911 owners say 944's are VW's not 'real' Porsches.
Let's see, rear engine, air cooled, horizontally opposed cylinders, pedals hinge on the floor, poor heating, torsion bars, heat exchangers, etc. I'm describing a VW Beetle. The 911 is nothing like that, right? |
Imagination is the mother of all inventions.... well, when the designer of the 944 ( i'll post his name tomorrow) suggested this design approach to his peers they laughed at him saying why?.. it wouldn't be a Porsche.. he went straight to the DR. himself and was rewarded because of his ability to see the future. Well, 911 owners haven't benefitted much from innovation because the powers that be regarding THAT car stayed in power and basically did little to alter their playbook. 944 designer and crew constantly improved their vehicle because they wanted to be the best at what they did, like the Italians and their Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. Basically they went crazy with their imaginations and design approaches. They to this day are still some of the most beautiful and best driving cars ever made.... the 911 all still look the same...what a shame, they're nice but extremely similar.. the 944 was a fork on the family tree that was stifled byinner conflict and jealousy at PORSCHE... they'll never bring it back because they don't need to. THe company has been soldand the future is Audi and VW. they've been given life from the 80's successes of the 944 and the 90's successes of the VW Beetle.... go figure..
|
When I was serious about buying a 944, my friends dad kept doggin on me (he owns a 964). Basically, he said that the car is a VW, which it is. When I tried to point out the fact that VW and Porsche are closely tied, he goes on to mention how his mechanic says the 944 is too costly to rebuild. Duh its too costly to rebuild! Thats why you buy one in pristine condition!!!
I eventually gave up and just bought a bmw instead. |
